???Food recovery is a bipartisan issue that demands Congressional leadership?? Earlier this week, Food Systems Collaborative was thrilled to co-host "Progress through Partnership: Bipartisan Solutions to Hunger and Food Waste,” a briefing held in conjunction with bipartisan Food Recovery Caucus chairs, Representatives Chellie Pingree (D-ME) and Dan Newhouse (R-WA) . This Congressional briefing brought together government agencies, farmers, nonprofits, and industry leaders in an effort to prioritize food recovery in the upcoming months. With this diverse coalition leading the way, it’s time for Congress to join us in creating innovative and lasting solutions. When 40% of food in the U.S. goes to waste and 48 million Americans experience food insecurity each year, it’s clear we need to unite across party lines to prioritize administrative and legislative solutions that address the unique, ever-evolving needs of food recovery in the U.S. That’s why we asked Congress to be a part of our efforts by joining the bipartisan Congressional Food Recovery Caucus. We’re so excited to say that the event was attended by 85+ staffers from across the aisle, proving food recovery can unite us across sectors and party lines. This event would not have been possible without the incredible team at Shipt, as well as the partnership of Sophia Adelle & The Farmlink Project, Regina Harmon & Food Recovery Network, and Will Thomas & Patelana Group ?? Huge thank you to our panelists and experts for their invaluable insights: Jean Buzby (USDA), Kim Watt (Timber Ridge Fruit Farm), Carlos Rodriguez (City Harvest), Erin Morris (USDA AMS), Laura Abshire (National Restaurant Association), and Eva Goulbourne (Littlefoot Ventures). Together, we are driving change! ???? We’re excited to see the momentum from this gathering transform into bipartisan action for food recovery. Want to get involved? Whether you're a staffer or a constituent, ask your Representative to join the Caucus. There's an entire congressional caucus dedicated to food rescue! This week, City Harvest's Chief Policy and Operations Officer Carlos Rodriguez spoke on a panel in Washington, D.C., hosted by the bipartisan group, to brief more than 85 congressional staffers on how food rescue can increase food security and reduce carbon emissions. Food rescue is at the heart of City Harvest's mission. This year, we will rescue more than 81 million pounds of high-quality, nutritious food that would otherwise go to waste and deliver it for free so that New Yorkers have the food they need to thrive. We are grateful for the opportunity to share our insights on Capitol Hill and to encourage food security for all of our neighbors.
