?? Reflecting on an incredible Gen Z Food & Hunger Summit in Washington, D.C.! ?? A few weeks ago, we had the honor of hosting the second annual Gen-Z Food & Hunger Summit with the Congressional Hunger Center. Over two days, we welcomed 50+ passionate students from across the nation to learn, advocate, and drive change in food security through federal policy. We were also joined by Representative Jim McGovern and Senator John Boozman, who gave insightful, inspiring, and honest remarks about the state of food policy today. As a result of the students' advocacy, Representatives Debbie Dingell (MI) and Lucy McBath (GA) signed on to co-sponsor the Opportunity to Address College Hunger Act, and Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (DC-At Large) signed on to co-sponsor the Food Date Labeling Act. We're so grateful for the support of our incredible sponsor, Shipt, and our nonprofit partners: The Farmlink Project, Food Recovery Network, Bread for the World, Student Basic Needs Coalition, Swipe Out Hunger, and The Bonner Foundation. So much fun to get to participate in the second annual Gen Z Hill Day hosted by Congressional Hunger Center and Food Systems Collaborative yesterday!

Delighted for our partnership with Food Systems Collaborative, Shipt, Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation, and so many youth-serving partners to make this summit a reality, and to bring the voices of Gen Z to meet with Members of Congress about the reality of food insecurity on their college campuses. To all the young advocates who joined us this week: your passion and your ideas are needed in the movement to #endhunger. Thank you for your time, courage, and dedication, and keep up the great work!

Earlier this week I had the amazing opportunity to attend #GenZFoodSummit24 with the Congressional Hunger Center and Food Systems Collaborative! It was amazing to meet so many fellow members of Gen Z who are amplifying their voices and advocating for food security. I was able to advocate at several congressional offices for the Opportunity to Address College Hunger Act (OACHA) which would require higher education institutions to notify federal work-study students that they may be eligible for participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). I also want to give a special shoutout to the most amazing group leader Amira Iwuala, MPH, CPH for supporting my group!

We were honored to partner with the Congressional Hunger Center and Food Systems Collaborative to plan the Gen Z Food and Hunger Summit. Last week, four of our student leaders, Adelaide Easter Danielle Cruz, Olivia Gillespie, and Ragan Hope Wilson, traveled to DC to share their experiences as college students and encourage legislators to support the Opportunity to Address College Hunger Act. This bill would require colleges to notify potentially eligible students about SNAP benefits and would have a significant impact on the college SNAP gap. #hungerpolicy #advocacy #highereducation #foodsecurity #studentsuccess https://lnkd.in/eSPhMXAb

Last week, a group of our FIELD fellows joined over 50 students from across the country at the Gen Z Food & Hunger Summit for an advocacy crash course, followed by an opportunity to take action. Young people taking the issues they care about into their own hands is at the core of Farmlink’s DNA, and we were incredibly proud to join the?Congressional Hunger Center?and?Food Systems Collaborative?at this year’s Gen Z Food & Hunger Summit. The FIELD fellows had the opportunity to learn from policy experts (including our own Head of Policy & Advocacy,?Sophia Adelle) about the intricacies of advocating for federal legislation. They then put what they’d learned into practice by meeting with Congressional offices representing their districts, whether it was where they live, go to school, or are immersed this summer. Each student advocated for the Food Date Labeling Act (FDLA) or the Opportunity to Address College Hunger Act (OACHA), which are critical pieces of legislation that will help reduce food waste and fight hunger nationwide. We were so excited to be a partner in this movement of young people fighting for food security in their communities and across the country, building momentum behind key legislation that centers innovative, common-sense solutions.
