Over the past few years, #PFAS — also known as “forever chemicals” — have gained worldwide attention. As evidence mounts that they cause serious health problems, why aren’t we moving faster to ban them? Thanks to their greaseproofing, waterproofing and stain-proofing qualities, PFAS are found in a huge variety of products, from cookware to food packaging to clothing. As a result, they have now been found in our drinking water, the soil on farms — and from there, our food. We now know that PFAS exposure is linked to negative health impacts including a variety of cancers, thyroid disease, endocrine disruption, liver damage and more. Chemical manufacturers concealed these risks for decades, but even once the EPA was aware of them, they were slow to take action. And although the Biden administration announced a roadmap for limiting PFAS discharge in 2021 and proposed limits for drinking water in 2024, the future of federal PFAS action is unclear. The Trump administration recently withdrew the plan to limit PFAS discharges, and has already substantially weakened the EPA. It’s a dramatic shift from campaign promises to address toxic substances in the environment, one that makes the promise to “Make America Healthy Again” all but impossible. In the meantime, state and local governments are picking up some of the slack, with several banning the manufacture and sale of certain PFAS. Lawsuits from utility companies and cities over contaminated water systems have also forced PFAS manufacturers into multi billion-dollar settlements.? When a chicken tests positive for bird flu, the entire flock is generally culled, which experts say is less cruel than letting birds die from the disease. But RFK Jr. has suggested simply letting the virus run its course, using the surviving chickens to breed more resistant poultry.
