In case you missed it, this month President Trump signed an Executive Order, establishing the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) Commission. The Commission, which will be chaired by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, is tasked with "investigating and addressing the root causes of America’s escalating health crisis.” This includes addressing the rising rates of nutrition-related chronic diseases, like obesity and diabetes. ??? Details of their approach will unfold in coming months, but underlying principles of the MAHA movement indicate that the Commission’s activities may likely impact the food and beverage sector. ?The creation of this new Commission sparks a lot of questions, like how will its activities fit with actions and directives by other federal agencies on food and nutrition policy. Want to follow along as we dive into these kinds of questions, and to receive timely updates about the ongoings of the Commission? Reach out to learn how!?

Media headlines indicate the federal government has been removing website content on important topics related to climate change and health. While some of the information can be found in internet archives, you may be wondering where to turn for credible, evidence-based advice. Is it still best practice to reference these federal datasets? Reduced access to publicly available federal health data could mean increased reliance on information from other sectors. FoodMinds VP Lauren Hoffman, MBA, RD shares her insights on this matter below: “Publicly available data is essential to research and strategy that support a healthy food and beverage environment. The recent barriers to accessing public information mean that now more than ever, the private sector and independent organizations must continue to be a lighthouse for reliable health and wellness information to ensure an informed public.” Want to learn more about how the new administration could impact your business? ?? As we wrap up the first month of 2025, here are 3 significant policy updates we have been monitoring: ? U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory on Alcohol and Cancer Risk: On January 3, the U.S. Surgeon General released a new Advisory on Alcohol and Cancer Risk, which calls for alcohol-containing beverages to have an updated health warning label that includes cancer risk and a reassessment of the current recommended limits for alcohol consumption. ? Front-of-Pack Nutrition Labeling: On January 14, the FDA introduced a proposed rule on front-of-pack nutrition labeling designed to provide consumers with quick and clear nutrition information. This proposed label would focus on saturated fat, added sugars, and sodium contents, with indications of “Low,” “Med,” or “High” noted on the front of the food package. Public comments will be accepted until May 16, 2025. ? Red?No. 3 Ban: On January 15, the FDA banned the use of FD&C Red No. 3 in food and ingested drugs. This decision came in response to a 2022 color additive petition from advocacy groups, and followed a 2023 ban on the same additive in California. Food manufacturers using FD&C Red No. 3 will have until January 15, 2027 to reformulate their products. Curious about what these changes means for you or your organization? Reach out to us to discuss! #foodminds #nutritionpolicy #foodpolicy
