Did you know the holiday that typically creates the most food allergy reactions is Thanksgiving? This is largely due to the variety of foods served, many of which contain common allergens. Key factors contributing to the increased risk include: Diverse Dishes: Thanksgiving meals often include multiple courses and a wide range of ingredients, making it challenging to identify allergens. Traditional Foods: Classic dishes like stuffing, gravy, and desserts may contain allergens such as wheat, dairy, nuts, and eggs. Cross-Contamination: Preparing large meals can lead to cross-contamination between allergenic and non-allergenic foods. Social Gatherings: Holiday gatherings often involve multiple families, increasing the likelihood of unrecognized allergens in shared dishes. Less Awareness: Not all hosts may be aware of the severity of food allergies or how to accommodate them, leading to unintentional exposure. To mitigate risks, it’s important for hosts to communicate about ingredients and for guests with allergies to be proactive in asking questions about food preparation. #FoodAllergyInstitute #ThanksgivingSafety #FoodAllergyAwareness #AllergyFriendly

Enhancing Safety in Food Challenges at TIP ??♂? During our Food Challenges, patients consume a higher dose of the food they’ve been gradually introducing at home, following a personalized plan. Afterward, they engage in 5 minutes of exercise. Why exercise? It raises the heart rate, distributing histamine—responsible for allergic reactions—more rapidly. By putting the immune system under mild stress, we ensure patients' tolerance is tested effectively and safely. This approach helps us confirm that patients can handle the food, even under stress. #FoodAllergyInstitute #FoodChallenges #SafetyFirst #PatientCare

This recommendation to delay or avoid emergency room follow-up after a life-threatening allergic reaction, especially one that required an epi-pen, should anger and concern everyone in the food allergy community. The importance of immediate medical attention following an anaphylactic reaction cannot be overstated. Anaphylaxis is a medical emergency, and physicians are trained to understand the urgency and severity of these reactions. For any healthcare provider to flip-flop on the seriousness of food anaphylaxis undermines patient safety and public health. It’s crucial that we stand united in advocating for proper care, education, and treatment protocols to ensure those with food allergies receive the life-saving attention they deserve. #FoodAllergyAwareness #Anaphylaxis #PatientSafety #HealthCare https://lnkd.in/gu5CXNUp
Every second counts when it comes to severe allergic reactions, like anaphylaxis. Epinephrine is the only defense against anaphylaxis, yet many caregivers are unsure when to administer it. A recent survey indicated that only 39% of caregivers know when to use epinephrine. Always administer epinephrine as soon as possible after identifying an anaphylactic reaction. Anaphylaxis is a severe reaction that involves multiple body systems. For example, if an individual is experiencing large, diffuse hives and repeated vomiting, this would be an anaphylactic reaction requiring epinephrine. In this example, the two body systems affected were the skin and the gastrointestinal system. However, reactions may vary from person to person. The other body systems include the respiratory system and cardiovascular system. It is important to remember that antihistamines, like Benadryl, cannot stop or reverse an anaphylactic reaction. At FAI, safety is our top priority. Each TIP patient receives a personalized scenario plan to help guide them through various allergic scenarios. Keep your scenario medications and two doses of epinephrine with you at all times. If you are a TIP patient with questions about your specific scenario kit, please contact our providers via TIP Connect.
