GOBBLE GOBBLE! This morning, our friends at Sigma-Aldrich generously donated more than 400 pounds of turkeys to Food Outreach! We are excited to be able to distribute these turkeys to our clients just in time for Thanksgiving!

We want to officially welcome Brittany Rudy, RD, Director of Nutrition and Programs, to the Food Outreach team! Brittany comes to Food Outreach with an extensive background including, most recently, at the St. Louis Veterans Administration Healthcare System, where she worked as a clinical dietitian, and at Operation Food Search as their Fresh Rx Community Chef! She joins us with over 15 years of experience working with food and nutrition. Brittany currently serves the United States Army Reserve as a Health Care Sergeant/Platoon Sergeant. Brittany will oversee our nutrition and dietetics team and will be leading our work related to nutrition education, dietetic counseling, and will build implementation strategies for our new partnership programs Welcome to the team! Today is World Diabetes Day. Food Outreach just completed an 18-month pilot program for Type 2 Diabetes with Mercy and SSM Health. The program provided 12 months of our medically tailored meals, groceries, and produce to 154 patients across both healthcare systems. These patients had an HbA1c >8.0%, were experiencing food insecurity, and living at or below 300% of the FPL. Many of these clients also received meal home delivery. Thanks to a grant through Washington University in St. Louis Center for Diabetes Translation Research, a team of researchers and Food Outreach staff will be conducting an evaluation of the impact of this pilot program including quantitative and qualitative measurements. The result of this evaluation will be published concluding the evaluation in 2025.

During the intake process, our Registered Dietitians assess new clients by asking questions about their ability to store, heat, and open the food we provide. Often, clients reveal they lack the means to heat their meals or even open cans. Additionally, some clients face dentition issues related to cancer (such as head, neck, throat, and mouth cancers) or have poorly fitting dentures that can affect their ability to eat solid foods.
