Food on Foot staff members Kelsie and Marisa had the honor of attending a banquet celebrating the grant recipients and student Board Members of the Bohnett Board at the University of Southern California. Each year The David Bohnett Foundation funds the Bohnett Board, a group of USC students who go through the process of researching local non-profit organizations, making site visits, and assessing how the organizations align with their funding goals, which they identified as access to education and homelessness services. We were delighted to spend some time with Mia Lombardo, Sara Yamada, and Samantha Fedewa, to hear about their philanthropic process and life on campus. Thanks also to David Bohnett Foundation for offering the unique opportunity for students to gain a new understanding of philanthropy and the non-profit landscape in Los Angeles.

Today we honor the work and lives of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King and Coretta Scott King, whose impact on our lives is immeasurable. His positions on racism, poverty, and war are so relevant for our world in 2024. At the core of Food on Foot’s mission is a commitment to creating a more equitable and just community, in which every person is given the opportunity to attain basic human rights: housing, employment, and a sense of safety and belonging.

This cold snap means extra safety and health concerns for the over 75,000 people experiencing homelessness in LA County. At Food on Foot, we believe that everyone has a right to housing, employment, and a sense of safety and belonging. We work to provide long-term housing for our Jobs & Housing members to ensure that more people are safe and secure during the longest, coldest, and wettest, nights of the year. We offer assistance finding employment and a home, and most importantly, hope, through financial support and the close relationships among our program members and staff. #endhomelessness #FoodonFoot

As the holiday season unfolds, I find myself reflecting on the values of kindness and generosity, traits that resonate deeply with the community supporting Food on Foot. National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week draws attention to the severity of food insecurity and homelessness in the United States. The numbers show that people we encounter in our daily lives – our neighbors, local students, the people who deliver our packages and take-out – are at risk of, or are suffering. Traditionally held just before Thanksgiving, this week allows us to give pause and educate people about hunger and homelessness both as social issues and as they impact the lived experience of our fellow community members, before we celebrate a holiday associated with abundance and gratitude for our good fortune. #homelessnessandhungerawarenessweek #FightHunger #ChangeLivesTogether

With over 3,800 veterans experience homelessness each night in Los Angeles, honoring the individuals who have made sacrifices to serve our country can not be limited to one day. Food on Foot’s Service Planning Area sees some of the highest numbers of veterans sleeping on the streets, in cars, and temporary shelters in LA County. Let’s remember them in our advocacy, giving, and plans to move the needle on homelessness all year round.
