Our commitment to #EndHunger in Washtenaw County is, in some respects, a logistics problem: Finding a way to get resources to the people who need them. We've got resources Washtenaw residents can use when they need help and don't know where to turn (or when to go). Click on our 'Find Food' link and then 'Open Now' to find a nearby partner agency where you can get assistance. https://lnkd.in/eV2Zi6Mb

It's always nice to reconnect with our partners in Washtenaw County! We hosted an agency open house this week to give representatives from our 140 partners in the community a glimpse at what we do and how we do it. It also gave us the opportunity talk about the impact of our successful collaboration with these fine organizations has had on the community: about 9.9 million pounds of food distributed last year! #EndHungerTogether https://lnkd.in/gF6-mxqR

Today is #WorldFoodDay, celebrated around the world every year to recognize the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945. Everyone needs nutritious food to thrive and, in every community in America, people are working hard to provide for themselves and their families. Even so, in 2023, 47.4 million people—1 in 7 people—experienced food insecurity in the U.S. We know we can #EndHungerTogether and we're diligently doing our part each and every day to fight hunger here in Washtenaw County. Here's how you can help: Corporate Sponsors | Food Gatherers

We believe anyone can play a role in the fight against hunger. Last week Calista Ann Dillon did just that--and she played a very special role, indeed! Calista is a fine arts student from Dayton, OH, who was looking for her senior project when she decided to take one final summer road trip to visit roadside attractions before she headed back to class. Lucky for us, she did. We were her last stop. The giant carrots at the entrance to Food Gatherers' Ann Arbor warehouse, which represent Food Gatherers' roots in the community and commitment to providing nutritious food, captured her imagination and heart. "This was a dream project for me," she said. The project unfolded over a weekend in four stages: scrape and clean, patch and fill, match and paint and weatherproof. Calista won't get graded on the project, only credit for graduation. What grade would you give her? It's an A+ from us!

In case you hadn't noticed, we are in the midst of an election season! No matter what your political affiliation, we think casting an informed vote is crucial to the preservation of our democracy. That's why Food Gatherers is helping pass out more than 1,000 voter education guides, made available by the League of Women Voters of Washtenaw County. These non-partisan voter guides help people get the information they need to register and what will be on their ballots. Many of our local partners are making these guides available to those that want during food pantry operations. For more information about the upcoming election, visit https://www.vote411.org/ #Vote2024

What a difference a weekend makes! Meet Calista Dillon, a fine arts student from Dayton, OH, who was on site this weekend restoring our giant carrots on Carrot Way. "This was such a fun project," she said. "I didn't want to leave. It's almost like they're my babies now." Check back throughout the week for more photos and learn how this exciting project came together!

Thank you for 30 years of leadership! Today we celebrate the 30th anniversary of our CEO and 'Carrot Queen,' Eileen Spring! Eileen joined us in 1994 and has taken us from about 935,000 pounds distributed back then to 9.9 million pounds distributed over the past year. Please join us in giving her a HUGE thank you for her big heart and for all she's done to make our world a better place! Here's a little bit about her background, too: https://lnkd.in/gFvb4VER

What a great way to put a cap on #HungerActionMonth! The USDA announced earlier today $1 billion in new funding for emergency food assistance through the Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC). That means $500 million for additional food purchases to be distributed through TEFAP, along with $500 million for the Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program (LFPA). We all know that, while inflation is easing, costs are still up. These funds will go a long way in our fight to end hunger where we live. While we're waiting word on the timing, it's always good to know that help is on the way! https://lnkd.in/ez88StDj
