Project Highlight: Napa State Hospital Main Kitchen FCA provided complete A/E services for a new 30,000 square foot Main Kitchen Facility at Napa State Hospital, which provides meals to over a thousand patients a day through the campus’ six satellite kitchens. The project involved abatement and demolition of six existing structures and extensive underground utility work. The program included a cook/chill bulk food delivery system, dry storage with high-capacity food storage racks, walk-in freezer and refrigerators, work areas for clinical dietitians, loading docks, a large mechanical yard, an electrical yard with emergency generator, an outdoor terrace, and an edible garden for use by the kitchen. ? Did you know that terrazzo is one of the oldest types of flooring? Comprised of a cementitious base mixed with aggregates of different types, it was a common old world building method. Today, an epoxy base matrix instead of cement is a popular choice due to the cost savings of epoxy and the broader range of color possibilities. Traditional cement terrazzo is still widely used, however, especially in applications where a more classic look is desired. Check out the photos from a recent project in San Jose, CA to see the installation at various stages: divider strips are laid, serving both as decorative elements and as control joints. The base matrix is poured in sections; additional aggregates may be broadcast over the matrix after it is poured. Chips of glass, rock, marble, mirror and even shells may be used as aggregates. Project Highlight: University of the Pacific Biological Sciences Building ? Completed in 2008, the project involved the master planning and design of a teaching and research facility for University of the Pacific's Department of Biological Sciences in Stockton, California. The modular 2-story facility was planned near existing laboratory buildings, providing an opportunity to create an outdoor amphitheater connecting the new and existing structures. The facility includes 16 laboratories, two auditoriums, a glass wash/autoclave, an electron microscope room, dark room, hot lab, conference room and offices. The lobby is defined by an iridescent backlit glass guardrail overlooking the light-filled entrance. The undulating wood ceiling in the auditorium mimics the movement of sound waves and helps project sound to the back of the room. The building was designed to establish an architectural vocabulary that harmonizes with the surrounding campus while introducing a modern flair and delivering cost-effective and flexible spaces. ???? ?? ?
