Last week, FOLOU partners Espigoladors, UNIBO, UNIVPM, and BETA TC joined the II FoodWaStop Conference (March 4-5, 2025) to discuss food loss and waste (FLW) solutions. ?? Espigoladors presented innovative FLW measurement methods. ?? BETA TC shared an overview of the FOLOU project and its impact. This event, funded by COST ACTION, brought together experts across the food value chain to explore sustainable strategies. Quantifiquem des de l’aire! El mes de desembre vam sumar forces amb les companyes franceses del projecte FOLOU, Dilepix, per temptejar l’adquisició de dades de pèrdues alimentàries amb un dron. Vam anar a Tarragona i a Mataró, en busca de cols i enciams exclosos! En el marc del FOLOU, estem quantificant pèrdues alimentàries seguint la metodologia que estem desenvolupant, que és principalment manual: és la més fiable i de referència, però com sabeu, a vegades és molt cara perquè requereix de moltes hores i recursos humans. Per això, hi ha companyes que estan investigant si hi hauria tecnologies que podrien facilitar el procés, de manera que sigui més factible de fer, sobretot per extensions grans de cultiu. Des de Dilepix estan mirant si processant les imatges que graven amb el dron, poden desenvolupar models que estimin la quantitat de verdures que es perden al camp. Per això, vam quantificar manualment i amb drons, per, posteriorment, comparar les dades i veure si pot ser una solució. In December we joined efforts with our French colleagues of the FOLOU project, Dilepix, to test the acquisition of food loss data with a drone. We went to Tarragona and Mataró, in search of excluded cabbages and lettuces! As part of the FOLOU project, we are quantifying food losses following the methodology we are developing, which is mainly manual: it is the most reliable method to do so in primary production according to the European Commission. But, as you know, sometimes it is very expensive because it requires a significant amount of time and human resources. For this reason, other partners are exploring whether new technologies could help facilitate the quantification of food losses, making it more feasible, especially for large cultivation areas. The Dilepix team is investigating whether processing the images captured by the drone can help develop models to estimate the number of vegetables lost in the field.
