A huge thank you to investigative reporter Chris M. for continuing to shine a light on judicial decisions against wildlife traffickers in Africa. Sadly, as highlighted in his recent article, the Kenya Wildlife Task Force (KWTF)—which our team at Focused Conservation helped establish and mentor—was disbanded in 2024 due to a lack of funding. However, the impact of their work lives on. Many major investigations conducted by the KWTF—including cases involving sandalwood, ivory, and other illicit wildlife products—are still moving through the Kenyan courts, seeking justice. Established in 2021 through a partnership between Focused Conservation and the Kenya Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the Kenya Wildlife Service KWS, the Kenya Wildlife Task Force (KWTF) was instrumental in dismantling wildlife trafficking networks for three (3) years. Drawing on decades of law enforcement expertise, our team remains dedicated to supporting wildlife crime units across Africa through specialized guidance, mentorship, and technical assistance. With renewed funding, there is hope that units like the KWTF can be reinstated or that new wildlife crime units can be established, following the proven model developed by Focused Conservation. Alfred Gatheca was today, in absentia, sentenced to 10 years in prison for dealing in illegal ivory. The judgement in case number E034/23 was delivered by Hon. Njeri Thuku at JKIA Law Courts #1. ? Gatheca, who remains at large with an active warrant of arrest, absconded in November 2023 as soon as he was released on bail. ? Hon. Thuku considered the gravity of the offence and the high value of the seized ivory. She emphasized the importance of wildlife, especially the Big 5, and the threats posed by illegal poaching. ? The court directed Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to take custody of both the confiscated ivory and the vehicle used in its transport. ? Hon. Thuku summoned the investigating officer to appear on March 17 with the surety. The court will then determine whether the bond will be returned or forfeited. ? This arrest and seizure had been made by the Kenya Wildlife Task Force (KWTF), a joint initiative by the Directorate of Criminal Investigation, Kenya Forest Service, Kenya Wildlife Service, and international NGO, Focused Conservation. The KWTF was disbanded in late 2024 reportedly due to a lack of funding. https://lnkd.in/d5YWZ5Xy
