关于我们

The First Nations Major Projects Coalition (“FNMPC”) is an organization run by First Nations - for First Nations. The Coalition recognizes that we are stronger together and was established to promote the shared interests of our First Nation members who represent regions from Coast-to-Coast-to-Coast. At the FNMPC, we are working to advance the capacity and technological needs of our members in the broad areas of Economic Participation and Environmental Stewardship. Through this work, the FNMPC is creating pathways to reconciliation by advancing opportunities for First Nations to obtain ownership stakes in major projects that run through their territories by advocating for sovereign loan guarantees and establishing economic models that would increase Indigenous participation in major developments. We know that the environment is inextricably connected to everything that we do and that in order for any major project to obtain First Nations support and consent, it must firstly meet our standards of environmental stewardship. At the FNMPC, we support these inherent responsibilities by working to build and promote Indigenous-led environmental assessment processes, not the obstacles in our way.

  • Indigenous partnerships in critical infrastructure, streamlined environmental permitting, and co-ownership in major projects are not only driving economic reconciliation in Canada but also enhancing the nation’s ability to meet the rising global demand for responsibly sourced natural resources, including critical minerals, LNG, and renewable energy. At the #FNMPC2024 Conference, Mark Cutifani, Chairman, Vale Base Metals, noted in an interview with JP Gladu BScF MBA ICD.D LL.D, Principal, Mokwateh, that the “conversation around energy and critical minerals has highlighted the need to develop certain resources much quicker than the systems are able to do. For us to be able to do that we need to build partnerships…..If you are looking to develop a prospect or project and you don’t have the support of a local community, you are already in a very high-risk proposition.” Day 1 afternoon of the upcoming 8th Annual FNMPC Conference will bring together transportation, industry, and Indigenous leaders to narrow in and explore how First Nations partnerships are reshaping Canada’s export landscape, driving economic growth, and securing the country’s place in global supply chains. • Join us in recognizing our own! We at the FNMPC hold our hands up for Angel Ransom, Senior Vice President of Environmental Services, and Niilo Edwards, ICD.D, Former CEO, FNMPC, on receiving the King Charles III Coronation Medal—an honour awarded to those making meaningful contributions to Canada and their communities. Niilo was a visionary leader with an unwavering commitment to economic inclusion, shaping FNMPC into what it is today—a movement for First Nations participation in major projects across Canada. His loving wife, Rachel Durie, who attended the ceremony, accepted the medal on his behalf posthumously. Angel has been and continues to be a driving force in advancing Indigenous rights in environmental and cultural protection throughout her career. She continues to work tirelessly to ensure Indigenous perspectives are not just acknowledged but embedded in impact assessment on major projects. Her leadership and work have been instrumental in FNMPC’s growth, most recently through her work on the Spirit of the Land: Indigenous Cultural Rights and Interests Toolkit—a vital resource that safeguards Indigenous cultural rights in project assessments. FNMPC Executive Chair, Sharleen Gale, represented the coalition at the ceremony in support of Angel and Niilo as a former medal recipient. Please join us in celebrating their contribution and achievements.

  • “It talks about our cultural rights that need protection. It’s understanding in ceremony. It’s a relationship between two entities—two people or the earth or the sky, whatever. That’s the significance when we talk about the spirit of the land. It’s got to do with the communion of the land and the air and all that’s in between.” – Regional Chief Melvin Hardy Last month at the Anishinabek Nation’s 2025 Land and Resources Forum, Angel Ransom, Senior Vice President of Environmental Services, FNMPC was joined by Regional Chief Melvin Hardy, Katelyn Peters, Eshki-niigijig Advisory Council, and Getzit Nmishomis James Mishquart, as they shared insights on the Spirit of the Land Toolkit. Released at the FNMPC 2024 Conference, the Spirit of the Land toolkit is a landmark document that addresses critical gaps in the current Environmental Assessment (EA) policy and law. The Spirit of the Land toolkit will help First Nations with the mining industry and other major project development sectors; by integrating the principles set out in the Spirit of the Land toolkit we can empower Indigenous nations to assess and articulate the potential impacts of major projects on their lands, traditions, and way of life. https://lnkd.in/gk3MUM3A

  • Increasingly, companies in critical mineral supply chains are realizing the advantages of integrating Indigenous values and leadership into their operations, and when First Nations are key decision-makers in development and natural resource management, they outperform external decision-makers. As Peter Bryant, Board Chair and Co-Founder of the Development Partner Institute, emphasized during the #FNMPC2024 conference, there is an opportunity to explore how mining projects can evolve as a community development engine and creating local prosperity that is led by the impacted Indigenous nations. Continuing this conversation at the upcoming 8th Annual FNMPC Conference, experts will explore how these benefits attributed to Indigenous nations are playing a key role in shaping mining projects and foreign investments as the global mining landscape adapts to new market demands. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to be part of this conversation. Register now: fnmpc.ca/conference
