Florida Municipal Power Agency (FMPA) is a wholesale power agency owned by 33 municipal electric utilities. FMPA’s mission is to provide power that is low-cost, reliable, and affordable, as well as provide value-added services for its owner-customers. Our members serve more than 3 million Florida residents. Each FMPA member is locally owned and operated, but they work together on common needs. For example, by coordinating the power supply needs of several communities, the utilities can build larger, more efficient power plants and share operating expenses, all of which reduces the cost of electricity. FMPA has six power supply projects. We supply all or some of the power 24 of our 33 members. Some cities do not purchase power from FMPA, but utilize other services from the Agency.

We'd especially like to thank Michael McCleary from Florida Municipal Power Agency for hosting the event this year, and our former Panel Chair Aaron Haderle from Kissimmee Utility Authority for lending your expertise with grading. If your utility submitted an application, we may be in touch soon for more information to help the panel make its final scoring decisions when they reconvene at APPA's office in December. FMPA was recognized with two awards at the Excellence in Public Power Communications Awards, a national competition sponsored by the American Public Power Association (APPA). FMPA received an Award of Excellence for its 2023 annual report titled “For the Record,” summarizing the Agency’s milestone of 45 years of growth and change while serving members. FMPA also received an Award of Merit for its 2024 “Behind the Switch” social media campaign, which highlighted the joint action agency’s power generation efforts in supporting #FLPublicPower. The annual event celebrates the women at Florida's energy companies, highlights the opportunities across the industry, and emphasizes the positive effects the electric and natural gas industries have on employment and economic development. “FMEA is continuing to actively monitor Hurricane Milton, now a Category 5 storm, for anticipated impacts to Florida’s public power communities. Twenty five of our 33 municipal member utilities collectively serving more than 1.3 million customers are currently preparing for potential impacts from Hurricane Milton. Our mutual aid network, comprised of utilities in Florida and across the United States, is mobilizing to support affected areas. We have already secured commitments from more than 50 utilities in 16 states, with more commitments growing our restoration workforce rapidly. Florida utilities are working diligently to bring in as many power resources as possible to support efforts following Milton. However, thousands of utility restoration personnel remain in areas of the Southeast still recovering from Hurricane Helene, which could impact or limit resources typically available to support Florida utilities. While public power utilities work year-round to harden their utility infrastructure against storms and emergencies, the forecasted damages caused by Milton could be extensive.
