The construction industry added 19,000 jobs on net in February, according to an Associated Builders and Contractors analysis of data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. 10 years ago, Darin Ross took a chance on me. I was a young man down on luck and in a bad spot. He hired me on as a "bid coordinator," which would be disrespectful compared to what actual bid coordinators really do. Soon after I started, the company's most trusted superintendent and hardest worker moved into the office and became our new Project Manager. BJ Chambers immediately set the tone and kicked me out of the office and into the field. I spent two years in the field, doing everything from day and nighttime superintendent shifts to carpentry work, flooring work, and any other scopes of work that we left out of the bid (lol, but actually). Eventually, I would make my way back into the office, once again helping out the estimating department. Luke Hardman was then in my re-end, talking about the importance of details and grinding out the aspects of estimating that are typically ignored. I was given the "opportunity" to work with BJ as his assistant project manager. I quickly learned that the opportunity would be an uphill battle. I couldn't work hard enough, I could not know all the answers, and I could seemingly never impress that man. It wasn't just him; I couldn't get a pat on the back from Luke, either. My change order submissions weren't good enough. I wasn't dedicated enough. I hadn't earned it from BJ or Luke. Until I did (1st child was born). Then, I realized this job/career was bigger than me. And when I made that connection, they gave me all I could handle. Quickly promoted to Project Manager over the then-new Special Projects Division. They entrusted me to bid, manage, and close all of our special projects. Excelling quickly in that role, they promoted me to Project Manager of Walmart remodels. In this role, I was once again under the toolage of my mentor, BJ Chambers. This is where I quickly learned to lean on Luke and his experience and knowledge. I listened, which is all BJ ever asked of me. Listen and learn. Now, heading into my 2nd year as a Senior Project Manager, I have another full plate. Managing 2 projects in Puerto Rico (a first for FMGI), managing our first ground-up Walmart in 15 years, and still being my fellow project manager's support in all aspects of the job. I will again be leaning on my leadership. I grew up in this company, was divorced, remarried, and had all three of my kids in this company. FMGI has been and will always be a huge part of my life. I don't imagine working anywhere else, ever. So, 10 years later, I'm just thankful. I am thankful that Darin took a chance on me, that Luke trusted me, and that BJ was there to mentor me through it all. I'm thankful that those three continue to give me opportunities. Without them, I really don't know what I would be doing in life or where I would be. But I know this: I wouldn't have been as successful without them, and my life would have turned out much differently. Here's to 10 more with my family. #stillbuildingexcellence #FMGI #FMGIfamily
