With support from Together Women Rise, we are expanding our Girls United program to reach more schools and more adolescent girls, equipping them with the knowledge, resources and support they need to make healthy, informed choices about their bodies, their education and their futures. Together Women Rise is a powerful community of women and allies dedicated to global gender equality. It has hundreds of local chapters across the U.S. where members come together to learn about and advocate for gender equality issues, give grants to organizations that empower women and girls and build community to forge meaningful connections with each other and with women around the world. While Kenya has made great progress in developing policies and legal frameworks to support inclusive education, issues on access, retention, transition, and learning for all children remain. On April 8th, 2024, the Population Council – Kenya, in partnership with British Council - Kenya and the Ministry of Education (MoE), hosted delegates from various MoE directorates, TSC, NACONEK, KNATCOM, UNESCO and partners from the development sector. The aim of this forum was to deliberate on the current contextual policy directions and challenges in relation to inclusive education, specifically the issues associated with ensuring that all children have access to high-quality education. Persistent challenges such as limited access to quality education for girls and children with special educational needs; low school enrolment and retention rates in ASALs and low-income rural areas and urban informal settlements; inadequate training, and support for teachers to effectively cater to diverse learning needs; school leadership that often does not prioritize inclusive practices; ineffective policy implementation; disjointed and siloed approaches towards creating all-inclusive education and uneven distribution of educational resources and infrastructure to effectively support marginalized children were identified as major barriers that continue to plague the country.
