??Fly Green Alliance (FGA) - travel & transport are joining 70+ companies ??in calling on the European Commission to urgently de-risk the scale-up of e-SAF production capacity to ensure success for ReFuelEU Aviation mandates. The private sector is ready to act, but key barriers are slowing progress: a lack of long-term revenue certainty, price risk, regulatory risk, and the challenges of first-of-a-kind projects. First-of-a-kind plants must reach Final Investment Decision by the end of 2025 to meet ReFuelEU sub-mandates starting in 2030. To unlock investment, five key policy actions are needed: 1?? Make e-SAF a strategic priority in the Clean Industrial Deal and the Sustainable Transport Investment Plan 2?? Recycle ETS revenues from aviation to capitalise a market intermediary that enters long-term contracts with e-SAF producers and short-term contracts with offtakers 3?? Establish a bridging mechanism in 2025 to support first movers before the intermediary comes online 4?? Provide certainty on mandates, production criteria and penalties 5?? Mitigate project-on-project risk via a government-backed backstop mechanism The EU has all the ingredients to lead on e-SAF, now it must act. FGA in parallel is working on decarbonised nuclear energy for eSAFs, supply chain energy sourcing work. FGA founder will speak at United Kingdom National Nuclear Laboratory this week. We believe is important to align with industry groups such as Project SkyPower and work collectively to push the agenda for aviation and net zero. Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom annonced the consensus results of the Revenue Certain Mechanism consultation: “This consultation response confirms that the Revenue Certainty Mechanism will take the form of a Guaranteed Strike Price (GSP). This will drive investment in SAF plants across the UK by providing confidence and certainty to investors. The GSP is the option that offers the highest level of confidence for investors. The scheme will be built on the established precedent of contracts for difference schemes, providing a clear and transparent claim process for industry and specifically targeted at UK SAF plants. “ This is very good news for aviation and the UK economy as it will support attracting billions of funding for SAF once implemented. Banks and traditional funding sources are still likely to wait until this implementation, said to be by 2026, but with hope that initial private investment will be able to bridge this timing gap for projects waiting for financial investment decision (FID) now. Last year Fly Green Alliance (FGA) - travel & transport was supported by Innovate UK Business Connect to apply for a Horizon Europe grant. We accelerated putting this together with a team and created an expert committee. FGA was coordinator which was a new role taken on, and Sarah Wilkin and Graeme Heyes Ph.D. created the proposal, 50 pages in length, gaining a mark of 6.5/10, which we are very happy with considering it was a first for both of us. We also gained some good feedback and it was a respected proposal. Unfortunately we did not get granted this time. No first time consortium has been granted, mentioned European Commission, but what this has done has given us excellent experience with the EU portal and in building the right team and proposal structure. Next time we won't be first timers and we also can now contribute better to other consortium. It also gave us an opportunity to write into the proposal and expert committee SMR developers and nuclear power as an essential part of the energy mix for transport for #eSAFs, #eFuels. Although accepted by European Commission nuclear is not overtly stated:"?European Commission does not use the term nuclear as such in the Regulation, and we cross reference to Renewable Energy Directive and Gas Directive for definitions and sustainability criteria.?" "eSAF produced from electricity from nuclear origin is covered by RFEUA. It is covered under low carbon fuels. Article 4 of the regulation 2023/0524 cites that low carbon fuels can count to the achievement of the targets. Low carbon fuels are defined in Article 3 that refers to the energy horizontal regulation." Building the supply chain and demand for eSAFs is an action point of FGA’s and why our founder spoke at World Nuclear Association and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) last year representing #aviation. In order to start this work. Fly Green Alliance (FGA) - travel & transport is now part of Project SkyPower and is supporting eSAF work to move forward. FGA are currently invited to a new consortium this year bidding to work on a plan for "?a transition to a clean energy system and the achievement of the zero-emissions target" , as a societal acceptance group and demand makers for net zero.
