Event information: ??Location: Starr Foundation Hall, New School University Center, Fifth Ave and 13th Street ??Date / Time: Thursday, March 27, 2025, 5:00 – 7:00 pm (Presentations), 7:00 – 8:30 pm (Reception) Featuring: (Host) Glenn Shrum, Parsons School of Design Global PALD Research Team Addison Kelly and Bill Maiman, IES New York City History Committee Cherine Saroufim '07, Atelier Saroufim/Academie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts Yuliya de la Calle '16, Station 22 Throughout history, a limited group of individuals have contributed significantly to establishing an architectural lighting design community in global, regional, and local contexts. These pioneers have paved the way for new groups of future designers to integrate light's creative, technical, social, emotional, and physiological performance into architectural projects. Presenters from the IES New York City History Committee will share details of the conditions that led Richard Kelly to establish his architectural lighting design practice, the first in the USA and globally. The program will introduce the Pioneers of Architectural Lighting research initiative aimed at documenting contributions of individuals throughout the world by sharing updates from nations including China, Colombia, France, Greece, India, Indonesia, Korea, Lebanon, Pakistan, Philippines, Russia, Taiwan, Turkey, and the USA. Attendees will learn about opportunities to access information about our shared history and participate in the ongoing process of telling the story of the profession. This event is free. Flux Studio is a transdisciplinary practice engaged in an investigation of the medium of light and its relationship to our perception of space. This pursuit results in work that spans conventional disciplines of art, design, engineering and research. We are committed to delivering high quality results that address the ethics and aesthetics of a contemporary design practice while considering the needs of building occupants, property owners, and the broader social context. Our team is fueled by a passion for light and a commitment to advancing understanding of light’s critical role in society. We believe each of our projects provides a unique opportunity for the integration of light. We uncover this potential though careful analysis of the intention of our fellow team members, the visual needs of users, and project constraints. We understand that great ideas require perseverance and commitment if they are to become great results. Above all, we value and strive to realize the full potential of creative cooperation. Just as human visual perception of light relies on interaction with materials, successful lighting design cannot be achieved without effective collaboration. We combine an advanced understanding of light that resulted from experience with openness to new discoveries. We have developed a range of techniques for communicating lighting issues with the clarity required to support understanding and consensus across the project team.
