Meet our 2025 California Water Leader cohort! The 21 rising stars were selected in a very competitive process to take part in our program that deepens water knowledge, enhances individual leadership skills and prepares participants to take an active, cooperative approach to decision-making about water resources. Members of the cohort met each other last week at our office in Sacramento where they learned more about the program and went to lunch by the nearby Sacramento River. This year, the cohort will be debating how to modernize water rights in Cailfornia to address the effects of prolonged drought, climate change and other modern-day challenges. They'll come up with their findings by the end of the year so stay tuned! Take a look at who made the cohort! ?? ?? https://lnkd.in/gCevUCFe #cawater #water #leadership

Our team is putting the finishing touches on the Tuolumne River Basso LaGrange Floodplain and Spawning Habitat Restoration Project. The earth moving is complete and planting is well underway. Even better, just a few days after completing riffle construction, Fall Run Chinook salmon arrived and started building redds on our brand new “riffle four.” We’re so thankful to our partners at the Tuolumne River Trust, Triangle, Applied River Sciences, and Monk & Associates Inc for seeing this project through. We look forward to more adult salmon spawning on the new riffles followed by baby salmon rearing on the new floodplains! Thanks to Mark R. Tompkins for the great photos. #SalmonRestoration #FloodplainRestoration #CaliforniaRivers #FlowWest

The salmon have returned! ?? This week, Klamath salmon have pushed their way up the Klamath River in force. From our project team's first sighting of a fish just above the former Iron Gate Dam at our sonar station, now agencies, Tribes, and fisheries monitors are finding spawning adults in multiple tributaries above the former dam sites, even all the way up in Oregon. The salmon are seizing the opportunity to return home and are taking advantage of this newly restored habitat. Per the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife: "On October 16, a fall-run Chinook salmon was identified by Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife fish biologists in a tributary to the Klamath River above the former J.C. Boyle Dam, becoming the first anadromous fish to return to the Klamath Basin in Oregon since 1912 when the first of four hydroelectric dams was constructed, blocking migration. The salmon and others likely traveled about 230 miles from the Pacific Ocean to reach the tributary only months after the four Klamath River dams were removed!" We are thrilled to hear this news from our friends at Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, and we are excited to continue monitoring fish populations with our partners as more fish migrate through the former dams!
