Asset allocation is perhaps the most important thing to get right when investing: basically, the balance of stocks and bonds. After you get your asset ALLOcation down, thought, asset LOcation (sorry, kids, I don’t make the rules…or the naming conventions) can help optimize your after-tax returns. This strategy can easily create unsustainable complexity, though, so at Flow we focus on getting most of the benefits while still controlling for simplicity. The ol’ 80/20 rule, basically. A blog post about using asset location to slightly juice your after-tax returns. https://buff.ly/3UOvgnU [Want to learn more about working with a financial planner? Visit me at flowfp.com]

We help women in their early-to-mid career in tech use their financial opportunities to live the life they want.
关于我们
Flow provides ongoing financial planning and investment management to women in their early to mid career in the tech industry. We have particular expertise in pre-IPO and IPO planning...and not making people feel bad about their finances. We are a virtual firm, we live in the Pacific Northwest, and we work with clients all over the country. We focus on women at this career stage because this is when So Much Is Happening! Changing jobs! Changing careers! Moving in together! Buying a home! Getting married! Having babies! Existential crises! Most of these women have never had to deal with the scale and complexity of the finances they now have. And they have precious few people to talk to about it all. We know that if we can guide these women to creating a strong and flexible financial foundation, if we can help them unearth, clarify, and commit to what truly matters to them, then they will be more fulfilled and financially stronger for the rest of their lives. Quite the return on investment, we’d say! Our biggest role is to be your advocate and thinking partner. If you want to get technical about it, we can also help you with: * Stock compensation (private and public company) * Changing jobs * Taking a break from tech (temporary or permanent!) * Giving to to charity * Handling this windfall of money that just landed in your lap. Eeep! * Open enrollment (health insurance, yep) * Taxes, understanding and staying on top of them (we don't prepare taxes; but we work closely with CPAs!) * Connecting to other professionals who can help (career coaches, insurance brokers, CPAs, attorneys, etc.)

You can use asset location to get more money *after-tax* out of your investment portfolio. But remember! This is icing on the investment cake. That cake’s ingredients? ?? Diversification ?? Low cost ?? An appropriate “asset allocation” (balance of stocks and bonds) But if you’ve already got the cake, and you want some icing, then you can implement just a few basic rules of asset location and get most of the benefits. What IS asset allocation? It’s an investment strategy that matches up the tax treatments of individual investments with the tax treatments of the account types you hold them in. Like, put your taxable bonds in your pre-tax IRA and your stocks in your Roth IRA. Learn how we use asset allocation for our clients at Flow in this week’s blog post. https://buff.ly/3UOvgnU [Want to learn more about working with a financial planner? Visit me at flowfp.com]

Let’s say you work with us as your financial planner. After we finish the initial work, our Annual Renewal Meeting will keep us on track year after year. Wondering what that meeting looks like? I’m glad you asked. I wrote a blog post about it.

If you’re worth > ~$5M, you could save your heirs a lot of taxes by moving some of your wealth out of your estate before 2026. Why? Because the possible expiration of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act at that point would radically change tax law. A blog post.

In which I reveal my not-so-unified theory of f*cks and eggs and how they decrease in number as women age: "I turned 48 earlier this year. Being that 80-year-old woman rocking on the front porch who doesn’t give one sh*t what other people think? #goals I have a working hypothesis that women, much as we are born with all the eggs we’re ever going to have, we are also born with all the f*cks we’re ever going to have. And, as with eggs, we shed those f*cks steadily over our lifetime until arriving at a point when we, ta da! have no more f*cks to give."
In the latest editions of Meg's Musings, I...muse about why I feel so content in life lately. Sure some of it is just getting older. But some of it is that I (continue to) work hard to figure out what I really care about. https://buff.ly/3YetdLU
