Five years ago today, our lives shifted dramatically with the onset of Covid-19. Looking at that pandemic with queer eyes, I could not help but regard Covid-19 in light of gay men’s experience of HIV/AIDS. Diego was in the very first cohort of my Heroes Journey leadership development program for gay, bi, and queer men. That was back in the summer of 2020, when the pandemic was turning our world upside-down. I was new to making the practice of leadership development and coaching from queer perspectives my occupation, and learning a great deal from every mastermind and coaching session about the range of challenges and possibilities faced by LGBTQ+ adults. Diego and the others in his cohort practiced generous openness with each other, and each gained a great deal from companioning one another for a leg of their respective journeys. Currently, the 7th cohort of Heroes Journey is underway. Gay, bi, and queer men from Latin America, Europe, Africa, and Asia have gone through this program, which creates a new kind of gay community, founded on vulnerability and mutual support, for the sake of personal growth and leadership development.
