A citizen initiative to amend the Florida Constitution in 2024
关于我们
How much is clean water worth to you? For many of us, Florida waters have shaped much of our identity. They refresh our souls, connect us with something greater, bring us the peace and serenity we all crave. For others, it is a source of bountiful fish and other wildlife, a place of cherished memories and recreation. And, zooming out, we all know that Florida is the "land of water," where major economic engines depend on accessing or just being near clean and healthy waters. We know the widespread, systemic problems and we're offering a sound, effective solution. Now, we need your help to make it happen. Why invest your time and money in Florida's Right to Clean Water? * The amendment language has been exhaustively researched and carefully drafted to specifically survive 1) Florida Supreme Court review, 2) post-enactment challenges and 3) legislative or executive branch attempts to undermine it. See our FAQ section and videos discussing these points. https://floridarighttocleanwater.org/#faq * It has cross-partisan appeal and support, especially among Floridians and Florida's coastal / small businesses dependent on clean and healthy waters. This includes fishing guides and ecotourism businesses, restaurants, family farms and other supporting organizations. * We have the campaign infrastructure; we just need your help to power the machine. We have a trained and equipped organization of volunteers in each region of Florida, but printing out and shipping blank petitions costs money, as do t-shirts, signs and handout materials for our volunteers. HELP US GROW & SUCCEED by stepping up however you can today. Check out https://floridarighttocleanwater.org/resources

It's Now or Never! If you're an organization or individual who cares about the environment, it's now or never! We need your support, particularly over the next 2 months. - Bad Legislative bills will make it much harder if not (unconstitutionally) impossible to pursue ballot measures by citizen initiatives (HB 1205, HB 1381, SB 1414, SB7016). Write to your Legislator and fight them! - Bad Legislative bills are pre-empting the ability for local communities to protect themselves - Polluter power continues to grow - Federal dynamics are diminishing our water protection We need your help! * If you're in any organization, ask ALL Florida members to sign a petition. https://lnkd.in/eQs6CX2M * If you can donate any amount, please do! We can't be successful without sufficient funding. You know what we're up against. https://lnkd.in/ewUapgRf * If you know potential larger donors, make the pitch or contact us so we can do it. Sharing this request to learn about Florida's water from Mary Tracy Sigman. "Many of you may have heard of the Florida Right to Clean Water petition movement and wondered if it is necessary. Our waters don’t look too bad, there’s no red tide or blue-green algae right now, lots of money is being allotted to our waters, so why all the fuss? One way to understand the condition of our local waters and how this affects our health, economy, and future would be to attend the Calusa Waterkeeper “Save Our Water” luncheon/panel discussion on March 27 at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theater from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. A variety of unparalleled experts will be speaking about solutions and challenges to our water quality, and you can decide for yourself if our waters are in crisis. For more information and to register go to:?https://lnkd.in/eWDXhixV. After attending you may wish to also support the Florida Right to Clean Water petition movement. Go to?https://lnkd.in/eQs6CX2M?to print out a pre-filled petition that just needs your signature and mailing. Please don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to learn about our waters and also find out how you can help." If you don't live in the Ft Myers area, just sign up for emails at https://lnkd.in/esy5neBY and see how you can turn the tide at this crucial time.

Sharing this letter from Cape Coral, Florida-resident, Dan Carney. "Politicians say NO to clean water: The states legislative session is now open. This is the time when our local representatives and senators put forth bills that they hope will become law. These proposed bills become available to the public to review. They say all politics are local, so what have our locally elected officials proposed so far this year? Our very own Rep. Jenna Mulicka has proposed house bill 1205. This bill would totally change how citizen petitions would be qualified to be put on the ballot in future elections. This bill would make citizen-enacted amendments to the state constitution nearly impossible. The requirement for a $1,000,000 bond poses a significant challenge for grassroots organizations to propose amendments on the ballot. There are also severe penalties if a petition is found invalid. This could be a wrong address, signature doesn’t match the voter registration, etc. Things that petition collectors have NO control over. It takes away the power of the people to change our constitution. Only lawmakers will have the power to propose amendments to the state constitution. Any proposed amendment already requires more than 900,000 signed petitions to get considered for placement on the state ballot. The Florida Right to Clean Water ballot efforts would very likely be doomed. The sad truth is our own elected officials are fighting to kill any public effort to put an amendment on the ballot. My suggestion is that you go to?https://lnkd.in/etQtqghs. Request a petition and sign it while it’s still legal to do so. We all need the right to clean water but our opportunity as a citizen of the state of Florida to demand that right could soon go away." ?? Just "Pitt-iful!", the real story of the Florida Legislature trying to pave over paradise. Craig Pittman tells it best! "Bill pushed by homebuilder would block local governments and voters from protecting these oases." https://lnkd.in/ecHcchUr

"Here are some of the descriptions for Cape Coral: Florida's Waterfront Wonderland full of canals and wildlife known as the "Venice of America." For those interested in fishing, the 400 miles of canals are teeming with a variety of fish. All this sounds exciting, but unfortunately, one must be cautious in eating the fish because of pollution, toxic red tide and algae overgrowth.?Swimming in this water wonderland is hazardous. I've been warned of not even touching the canal water, especially if one should have an open scratch on their hand.?I have seen photos of a fisher who developed flesh-eating bacteria to his arm from a tiny cut on his hand.?Just breathing the toxic fumes form the blue-green algae is dangerous to one's health. But, alas, there can be a solution to this pollution, especially when the toxic brew from Lake Okeechobee is released into our river.??Florida Right To Clean Water is a grassroots, volunteer, nonpartisan organization formed to place an amendment to the state Constitution.?A?group of citizens intent on bringing effective change to?water?protection in?Florida, they?simply want the government to properly enforce the law. This amendment creates an enforceable, fundamental right to clean and healthy waters. " - Dr. S.M. Zimmer, Cape Coral https://lnkd.in/gsivJSFf This amendment is the ONLY way!
