?? Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight - 1937 Antifascist Women’s March Historical Mural and Marker Project?? For the last day of Hispanic Heritage Month, let's make another stop at Ybor City for a remarkable project that highlights the significant yet often under-recognized contributions of Cuban American women who protested global fascism in 1937. Launched on March 30, 2023, the 1937 Antifascist Women’s March Mural and Marker Project in Ybor City commemorates the day 5,000 Latinas marched in resistance against fascism, making it the first historic preservation effort in Ybor City to unite art and scholarship. Spearheaded by historian and author Sarah McNamara, the mural and historical marker recognized historic Latina political action in Tampa for the first time. The 1937 Antifascist Women’s March Mural and Marker Project received a 2024 Florida Preservation Award in the category of Preserving Place. The effort required extensive negotiation and collaboration with multiple partners, including the City of Tampa Division of Arts and Cultures, Hillsborough County Historical Commission and local community groups, leading to a highly successful unveiling during Women’s History Month 2023. The mural was created by Cuban American artist Michelle Sawyer. ?? Spotlight Sunday?? John Daly - Volunteer of the Year (2024) An attorney dedicated to community service, John Dale has been instrumental in preserving Florida’s cultural heritage. While pursuing a master’s degree in Historic Preservation, he Green Gables, an 1896 historic home in Melbourne, which was on the verge of demolition. Envisioning the home as a living history museum and community center, he founded the nonprofit Green Gables at Historic Riverview Village, Inc., which eventually saved the structure and continues to preserve it today. Daly galvanized community leaders and local developers, cleared the overgrown grounds, repaired the roof and organized events to raise awareness and funds. His relentless efforts resulted in Green Gables being listed on the 2018 Florida’s 11 to Save list and on the National Register of Historic Places. Over ten years, his commitment culminated in the successful purchase of Green Gables, ensuring its preservation. ?? Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight - La Florida: The Interactive Digital Archive of the Americas?? La Florida: The Interactive Digital Archive of the Americas is a groundbreaking online tool providing access to over 8,000 high-resolution images of Spanish documents from 1594 to 1821, housed in the Diocesan Archives of St. Augustine, Florida. The site includes transcriptions, English and contemporary Spanish translations, maps, videos, a data visualization tool and a biographical database of more than 75,000 individuals. This open-access platform allows teachers, researchers and history enthusiasts to explore Florida’s colonial past. The project offers unprecedented access to St. Augustine's colonial history and highlights the complex, diverse nature of its inhabitants. It received a 2024 Florida Preservation Award in the category of Preservation Communications/Media. ?? Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight - J.C. Newman Cigar Factory?? Founded in 1910 by Regensburg and Sons, the J.C. Newman Cigar factory represents the legacy of Cuban and Spanish immigrants, who, among others, shaped the cigar industry and the cultural heritage of Ybor City and Florida. Nicknamed El Reloj in honor of its iconic clock tower, the factory is located in the historic Ybor City neighborhood and is a contributing structure to the Ybor City National Historic Landmark District. For more than 100 years, El Reloj’s chime has marked the time for local cigar rollers and their families throughout the day. J.C. Newman Cigar Co purchased and restored the factory a few years ago, retaining the traditional hand-rolling cigar methods. Spotlight Sunday?? 2024 Florida's 11 to Save - Orange City Shuffleboard Club Built in 1918, the building functioned as Orange City’s inaugural Town Hall, coinciding with the town’s first municipal votes by women. Now owned by the City, the building was moved to its current site to serve as the Orange City Shuffleboard Club’s clubhouse, founded in 1944. Recognized since 2004 as a contributing structure to the National Register Historic District, there are ongoing discussions regarding the future of this site. Last year, these discussions included options to demolish the shuffleboard courts and the building for a parking lot. Earlier this year, the City postponed this option to provide opportunities to conduct more analysis for parking needs and site restoration. The site has historically served as a social gathering place and recreational facility benefiting all Orange City resident and enriching the district’s heritage, as it tells so many of the community’s stories. The nominator hopes inclusion on the 11 to Save will increase community awareness of this historically designated site to create momentum toward restoration in place.
