Florida's new homelessness policy, shaped by the conservative Cicero Institute, shifts the state's approach to addressing homelessness. The policy bans public camping, establishes sanctioned encampments, and directs resources towards mental health and substance abuse treatment. This marks a departure from the "Housing First" approach, which prioritizes providing stable housing to the homeless. Advocates of Housing First argue that stable housing is essential for treating mental health and substance abuse issues effectively. Research has consistently shown the benefits of providing housing in reducing homelessness. As homelessness continues to be a pressing issue in Florida, it is important we consider the potential impacts of this policy change and the effectiveness of the Housing First approach in supporting the homeless population.
