When Zina Ward & Tom Juzek of the FSU Data Science Program noticed that scientific abstracts were overusing specific words, they wanted to learn more. Their research into the word choice of large language models analyzed the interactions between technology and human language and has implications for linguistics, computational linguistics and data science. They joined Science Friday host Flora Lichtman today to discuss their research ?? https://lnkd.in/eJJbXpwS

关于我们
At Florida State University we ask the big questions. We build partnerships. We innovate. We solve problems and make an impact. Our faculty and students pursue real-world solutions in sciences and engineering while enriching our knowledge and experiences through the arts and humanities. Florida State is where the life-saving drug Taxol was first synthesized. It’s home to the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory where every day, scientists make breakthroughs in materials, biomedical research and energy. It’s where dedicated researchers are working daily to ensure all children at reading at grade-level by second grade. At Florida State, we pursue knowledge and solutions to make the world a better place. The Florida State University Office of Research is the administrative arm that supports these researchers in their scientific and creative endeavors. Managing more than $414 million in research expenditures, the Office of Research staff focuses its efforts on helping faculty move their work forward at every stage of the research process from identifying potential funding opportunities to protecting intellectual property to identifying potential industry partners.

For decades, people have been trying to directly detect dark matter: the missing mass in our universe. Now, a cooperative research effort from the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, University of California, Berkeley and other collaborators is making possible a new, super-sensitive detector to search for kinds of dark matter that other detectors can’t find. Florida State University researchers have created a machine learning tool that can identify the chemical composition of dried salt solutions from an image with 99% accuracy. By using robotics to prepare thousands of samples and artificial intelligence to analyze their data, they created a simple, inexpensive tool that could expand possibilities for performing chemical analysis. The work was published in Digital Discovery #RSCDigital, a Royal Society of Chemistry journal. “We are living in the age of artificial intelligence and big data,” said co-author Oliver Steinbock, a professor in the FSU Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry. “We thought that if we used sufficiently large databases with enough pictures of different compounds and stains, we could maybe use AI to determine what the composition is.” The research could make possible cheaper, faster chemical analysis that could be used in space exploration, law enforcement, home testing and more. Some inside pictures of just one of our #FSUshadow opportunities at Kasha Lab. Interested in providing your own employer experience? Email [email protected] to sign up for the next session before March 27
I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the 2025 Spring #FSUShadow Program at Kasha Lab, where I shadowed Dr. Thayumanasamy Somasundaram at the X-Ray Crystallography Facility within the Institute of Molecular Biophysics, Florida State University. This experience gave me a firsthand look at the role of Shared Scientific (Core) Facilities, where advanced technology, expert knowledge, and specialized equipment come together to support scientific research. I gained insight into the intricate process of X-ray crystallography. One of the highlights was practicing the transfer of protein crystals into liquid nitrogen, a critical step in preserving them for analysis. This hands-on experience allowed me to bridge the concepts I’ve learned in my coursework with real-world applications in structural biology. I also developed a deeper understanding of how Core Facilities support researchers, manage resources, and drive innovation in both academia and industry. A huge thank you to Dr. Soma for his mentorship, insightful explanations, and for sharing his decades of expertise with me!
