It was wonderful to welcome guests and attendees from the American Welding Society?(https://www.aws.org/) and the?International Thermal Spray Association?(https://lnkd.in/eQ8FVRQD) under the aegis of the 2024 Annual Meeting held last week. Our Team (Arvind Agarwal,?Tyler Dolmetsch, and?Tanaji Paul) gave a tour of the?Cold Spray and Rapid Deposition (ColRAD) laboratory’s array of thermal spray and additive manufacturing facilities such as cold spray, wire arc directed energy deposition and plasma spray. What followed were enriching discussions, plans for further strengthening collaboration, and WAAM demo. Located just 5 miles from our laboratory, the American Welding Society has been a “close ally” highlighting our facility and covering key events, research, and achievements through their publication?“SPRAYTIME” (https://lnkd.in/eWVPfC45). Exciting times at Cold Spray and Rapid Deposition (ColRAD)! Earlier this month, we were honored to host the U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Alejandra Y. Castillo, the Mayor of Miami-Dade, Daniella Levine Cava,?FIU President Kenneth A. Jessell and senior leadership at our Cold Spray and Rapid Deposition (ColRAD) Laboratory. We introduced our cutting-edge additive manufacturing technologies, including Cold Spray and Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM), designed to enhance energy efficiency in producing advanced materials for aerospace, electronics, and biomedical industries. Students and our team (Tyler Dolmetsch, Tanaji Paul, Blanca Palacios Salamanca, Katrina Rodriguez, Denny John, Anil Lama, Kazue Orikasa, Suleiman Muktari, ABHIJITH K S, Anthony Gonzalez, Luiza Benedetti and Jorge Carreno) were excited to showcase their research. Our Cold Spray and Rapid Deposition (ColRAD) team had a fantastic time at CSAT/LSAAT 2024 conference in Worcester, MA earlier this week, where we showcased our cutting-edge research and innovative projects. ColRAD@Florida International University team was honored to present 2 invited talks and display 6 posters covering a wide range of topics, including: 1. Cold spray high-strength aluminum alloy 2. High-speed imaging in Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) 3. Electronic and radiation shielding applications of cold spray 4. Robotics and 5. Corrosion in WAAM A special highlight of the event was Blanca Palacios Salamanca, our PhD student, who won the Judges' Choice Poster Award for her outstanding work on the "In-situ deformation mechanics of WAAM Ti". Congratulations to Blanca and the entire team (Arvind Agarwal, Tanaji Paul, Tyler Dolmetsch, Dwayne McDaniel, ABDERRACHID Hamrani, Denny John, Anil Lama, Sohail M.A.K. Cold Spray and Rapid Deposition (ColRAD)'s latest research explores the enhancement of aluminum high-entropy alloy (Al HEA) powder for cold spray deposition.? In our article, "Devitrification-Induced Tailoring of Microstructure and Strength in Aluminum High-Entropy Alloy Powder for Cold Spray Deposition," we control devitrification at various temperatures to optimize strength and deformation behavior for cold spray processing.?The unique composition of Al HEA powders in synergy with the heat treatment has the potential to surpass the properties of cold-sprayed Al 7075, the current benchmark for high-strength aluminum standards. This advancement opens new possibilities for creating high-strength, structurally integral deposits using amorphous or traditionally less cold-sprayable powders.
