On National Rural Hospital Day, FHA recognizes the vital importance of Florida's rural hospitals and health care providers. Our 24 rural hospitals provide high-quality care close to home, serving babies to seniors while anchoring their communities' economic health. Through the Florida Legislature's investment of $10 million in recurring funds for the Rural Hospital Capital Improvement Program, facilities like Calhoun Liberty Hospital in Blountstown and Jackson Hospital in Marianna are continuing to transform care and create jobs for Floridians. ?? ?? ?? In the wake of a busy and devastating 2024 hurricane season, Florida's hospitals are taking notes on what went well and what can be improved for future seasons. Proactive coordination of supplies, investments in mitigation infrastructure and successful evacuations are all the results of lessons learned from previous hurricanes and examples of how hospitals work year-round to prioritize patient safety before, during and after storms. "The only positive to experiencing so many hurricanes is that our hospital emergency management staff continually analyze their plans. This ongoing testing creates opportunities to identify vulnerabilities," said FHA President and CEO Mary Mayhew In an interview with Becker's Healthcare, Mary Mayhew, alongside Tampa General Hospital Vice President of Public Safety, Tony Venezia, shared five emergency preparedness strategies that hospitals around the country can leverage to bolster their own emergency management practices. The nursing turnover rate has seen a 45% reduction since 2022, falling to 17.6% in 2024 from its peak at 32%. ? Likewise, the number of nursing vacancies has decreased. There are more than 16,000 vacancies in 2024 compared to more than 58,000 in 2022. Mary Mayhew
