It's National Working Moms Day! ???????? Today, we celebrate the incredible moms who balance work, family, and everything in between. It's also a day to highlight significant challenges working moms face, like the current Colorado Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP) enrollment freeze for new applicants due to a shortfall of state and federal funding. Affordable childcare is vital to the success of teen parents, as it allows them to balance school and work. Currently, CCAP covers a significant portion of tuition for many families at FloCrit's Early Childhood Education (ECE) Center, with fundraising covering any remaining costs. Without CCAP, additional fundraising will be needed to cover the full tuition, limiting access to affordable childcare at FloCrit's ECE Center and hindering teen moms' ability to work, attend school, and engage with communities. Driving change through #advocacy Yesterday, FloCrit teen moms visited the Colorado State Capitol to share their stories and raise awareness about challenges they face. It was a meaningful day as FloCrit moms had the opportunity to engage with the legislative process and feel the impact of their voices on lawmakers who represent communities around the state. ????? Thank you to representatives Mandy Lindsay, Alex Valdez, Steven Woodrow, Yara Zokaie, Ryan Gonzalez, and Senator Julie Gonzales for giving FloCrit teen moms the space to share their stories and make their voices heard on key issues that impact teen parents, such as teen parent autonomy, driver's license access, and the housing crisis. According to the USDA, more than 47 million people in the U.S. face food insecurity. For teen moms, food insecurity can be particularly detrimental, making it harder for them to focus on school and graduate. To decrease food insecurity among FloCrit families, we've partnered with Lifespan Local, an organization dedicated to meeting community needs in Southwest Denver. Through their Southwest Food Coalition, they supply us with around 50 food boxes each month, providing teen families with the nutritious food they need to thrive. Many FloCrit teen moms face legal challenges similar to others, but the steep cost of legal services makes it difficult to access support. FloCrit's legal clinic offers free legal assistance from volunteer attorneys, empowering teen moms to navigate the legal system and represent themselves in court. In FY24, the clinic held 20 on-campus appointments and played a key role in mediating parenting plans for FloCrit families. The impactful work of FloCrit's legal clinic is made possible in part by the Colorado Bar Foundation, the charitable arm of The Colorado Bar Association. During the cold months, rising energy costs can put a strain on teen families, leaving them to choose between heating their homes and meeting basic needs like food and rent. Some families may fall behind on energy bills or go without heat entirely. To support FloCrit families throughout the winter, Family Advocates connect them with resources, including Energy Outreach Colorado, a nonprofit that offers financial assistance with energy bills, heating repairs, and cost-reduction programs, as well as LEAP, a federally funded program that helps eligible families cover heating costs. This support empowers FloCrit families to thrive during the winter season. Additionally, FloCrit eases living costs for teen families through its on-site Housing Basic Needs Store, offering essentials like cleaning supplies, kitchenware, and bedding.
