Why does genetic diversity matter in conservation? Because resilient ecosystems start with resilient populations. RAD-Seq gives researchers a powerful tool to assess genetic variation, detect population structure, and monitor changes over time. It’s especially useful for non-model organisms where reference genomes may not be available. From fish to iguanas, RAD-Seq helps unlock the genetic stories that inform conservation decisions. • This Earth Month, we’re reflecting on the role of genomics in protecting biodiversity—because safeguarding the planet starts with understanding the life on it. One example: our work supporting research on the critically endangered Anegada rock iguana (Cyclura pinguis). This species has experienced multiple genetic bottlenecks, and by analyzing genomic data, researchers can better understand inbreeding depression and inform conservation strategies. At Floragenex, we’re proud to support efforts like these—where science meets impact. #GenomicsForThePlanet #EarthMonth #ConservationGenetics #Floragenex #AnegadaRockIguana

  • The quality of your sequencing data starts long before it reaches the lab. Proper sample preparation ensures high DNA yield, minimal contamination, and consistent results. When samples don’t meet optimal quality standards, adjustments can be made to improve extraction and sequencing success. From refining protocols to troubleshooting difficult samples, the right approach can make all the difference.

  • DNA extraction doesn’t always go as planned. One of our clients needed to sequence DNA from historical specimens. The samples had been preserved for decades, meaning the DNA was highly degraded and yielded only small fragments. Instead of forcing an extraction method that wasn’t yielding viable DNA, we worked with the client to adjust the sequencing approach. By switching from Whole-Genome Sequencing (WGS)—which requires high-quality DNA—to a RAD-Seq approach, we were able to: ✅ Generate meaningful genomic data from degraded samples ✅ Reduce sequencing costs while maintaining research goals ✅ Ensure the project moved forward without further delays #Genomics #DNASequencing #NextGenSequencing #GeneticAnalysis

When working with Next-Generation Sequencing, PCR duplicates can distort results, over representing certain fragments while underrepresenting genetic diversity. These duplicates arise during library amplification, particularly in low-input DNA samples. At Floragenex, we use optimized protocols and sequencing strategies to minimize PCR duplication, preserving the true biological variation in your samples. For researchers relying on RAD-Seq, Whole-Genome Sequencing, or Targeted Sequencing, reducing PCR duplicates ensures cleaner, more accurate genomic insights. #genomics #dna #genomicinsights #ngs

Not all DNA is created equal—so how do you know if your sample is right for sequencing? Different sequencing methods have different DNA quality requirements. Some, like RAD-Seq, can handle a bit of fragmentation, while others, like Whole-Genome Sequencing (WGS), require high-molecular-weight DNA for the best results. Choosing the right approach depends on your research goals—but also on the quality of your starting material. If samples don’t meet quality requirements, adjustments during library preparation can help. From cleanup steps to custom extraction strategies, ensuring high-quality DNA is key to getting reliable sequencing results. 💡 Need guidance on selecting the best sequencing method for your samples? Nestled in the British Virgin Islands, the Anegada Rock Iguana (Cyclura pinguis) stands as the largest native vertebrate in the region—yet it teeters on the brink of extinction. For almost three decades, conservationists have been working tirelessly to safeguard this species through a Head-start Program, which nurtures wild-collected hatchlings in protected environments before releasing them back into the wild at a larger size, making them less vulnerable to non-native predators. Floragenex is proud to support this conservation effort by performing RAD-Seq on iguana samples collected from Anegada, Guana, and Necker Islands. This genomic analysis helps researchers uncover how genetic bottlenecks and inbreeding impact the species’ survival—crucial insights that inform future conservation strategies. Beyond preservation, these iguanas play a key role in their ecosystem, from seed dispersal to soil cycling, highlighting the interconnectedness of biodiversity. By combining on-the-ground conservation with cutting-edge genomics, we move closer to securing a future for the Anegada Rock Iguana. Stay tuned for more Species Spotlights as we explore the power of genomics in conservation! #Genomics #Conservation #Biodiversity #GenomicAnalysis #Iguana #Wildlife

DNA extraction is the foundation of any successful sequencing project, but scaling up for high-throughput applications presents unique challenges. It’s not just about extracting DNA—it’s about ensuring consistent quality and reliability across large sample sets. Factors like sample type, contamination risks, and processing efficiency all impact results, making method optimization critical for large-scale projects. At Floragenex, we’ve been working on solutions to streamline DNA extraction for high-throughput workflows. While every project is unique, one thing remains constant: getting the method right at scale is just as important as the extraction itself. What are the biggest hurdles you’ve faced in large-scale DNA extraction? Let’s discuss! #Genomics #HighThroughputSequencing #NextGenSequencing #Agrigenomics #DNAExtraction
