?? Calling all TEACHERS! Fancy an awesome weekend away with us? Join the Flooglebinder team in March 2025 for a hosted weekend of adventure on the stunning Pembrokeshire coast. You’ll be joining a group of AWESOME teachers for a weekend of fun, learning, relaxing and meeting new people. And, it’s just for TEACHERS!? Every year, we gather a group of like-minded teachers in an incredible setting for a weekend of nature immersion, hiking, sailing, coasteering, yoga, swimming and good old-fashioned mingling. It’s a chance to get away from it all, be outdoors, and try some awesome new activities. It also happens to be a chance to hear some incredible guest speakers, broaden your understanding of good sustainability practices, pick up some useful tips on learning outside of the classroom, earn valuable CPD……and…. kick back and get looked after by us. Just a regular day for the Floogle team, hanging out with some bison in the Carpathian Mountains ?? ??? Sadly, they are not this cuddly and you might not want to get this cosy - it is the heaviest wild land animal in Europe and quite a beast! They are pretty awesome creatures, and their story is one of the reasons we take students deep into the Romanian wilds. The European Bison teetered on the edge of extinction and was only saved by a?zoo in Poland. Conservation breeding from the few surviving animals and subsequent reintroductions across Europe has led to its remarkable recovery.?And they are a pretty important species too - their behaviour creates a myriad of different habitats and associated species to thrive, like their trampling and wallowing, which creates mini habitats for pioneer plants, insects and lizards. Clever bison! It’s super exciting to know we’ll be taking so many students to this incredible part of the world next year, and in preparation, some of the Floogle team headed out to the mountains last week. Not just there to cuddle stuffed bison, the team were refining our Carpathian conservation and adventure itinerary to ensure our students enjoy the most enriching travel experience we can offer them. We like to check logistics, accommodation and quality, but our focus will also be on ensuring that our project and activities continue to positively impact the environment and local communities. It’s Green Careers Week and we couldn't be happier. This is a chance to create a buzz and increase visibility around opportunities for young people in careers that contribute to preserving or restoring the environment and our planet. Personal development is one of our 'four pillars', which means we design and deliver our programmes that always factor opportunities for students to glimpse into what a career in the world of conservation, restoration and sustainability might look like, on a local and global scale. We are on a roll with the newbie introductions here at Flooglebinder, so let's do another - it's time to meet Emma, who quietly works away behind the scenes but is very much the beating heart of our operations. Take it away, Emma..... "Hello, I'm Emma, and I am delighted to join the Floogle fam. I am here to support you with all things related to project operations and compliance. My journey into this role has been one where I have consistently been drawn back to working with young people, the great outdoors and my love of spreadsheets (yes, I know not everyone's cup of tea!) I studied Sports Development at Portsmouth University, and I spent many summers working at an outdoor activity centre, teaching families to push their comfort zones through kayaking, sailing and rock climbing. This set me up to move into full-time work and manage 8 indoor climbing walls, running the Duke of Edinburgh award and personal development programmes all over the UK. I transferred these skills into my previous role as Conference and Projects Manager for an education charity, where I organised and project-managed incredible worldwide service programmes and conferences for students. Taking on this incredible role with Flooglebinder has allowed me to take the next step into project planning and ensure we provide exciting opportunities for students to explore the world through a sustainable and ethical experience. These trips are powerful enough to change a mindset and outlook - something I have experienced first-hand visiting South Africa, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Nepal to name a few! When I'm not juggling work and family life, I enjoy being in the swimming pool and working on my VW Campervan. Our 'closer to home' projects in Wales and the Isle of Wight are in full swing this half-term. This time, we're hosting college students. Our itineraries are curated for your individual needs, which means we can welcome both schools and colleges to these projects. Our focus is always on conservation, sustainability, personal development and mental health, but we can adapt and lean into what's important to your students. Over the last week, this bunch have done some serious fieldwork, developing skills over a range of ecological techniques, including grassland surveys, soil sampling, hedgerow surveys and mammal track and sign. There has been bird ID and behaviour monitoring, beach cleans, coastal ecology and species ID, foraging, aquatic ecology and some trapping techniques for estimating species richness. Oh, and let's not forget the fun stuff: coasteering, sailing, campfires, yoga, disconnecting from devices and total immersion in nature.
