New travel Podcast. Traveling is complicated for everyone and even more so if you can't see. Blind since age three, I have had to get really good at dealing with complexities, finding work-arounds and having lots of patience. So, I would consider blindness for me a feature and not a bug. I have recorded my travels to 35 countries since the 70s, less so more recently since short-term videos and photos seem to be the way to document a trip. I thought of turning the 240 stories I have into a podcast but there are so many podcasts out there. I thought I'd get lost in the fray. I finally took the plunge in published an intro episode this month. It is called, The People Make the Places, Mike May and Friends. You can find it that way on the Apple podcast app and by searching, The People Make the Places podcast on Alexa. It appears on the Victor Stream as well. It may show up elsewhere as I learn the nuances of distribution. This is meant to be about travel and the people who make the places we visit special. We just came back from Bali. I have a new episode soon on some friends traveling to Japan. The intro episode has clips of me skiing in the Paralympics and riding in the cockpit of a 727 in route to Iguazu Falls in Argentina. I am hoping to crowd source stories from others for the future to mix with my stories. Enjoy!

We received another matching pledge from the Gordon and Llura Gund Foundation! This time it is for $60,000! We have until the end of the year to raise the money. Read more below!

Founder and Executive Director of Flight for Sight

My brother John Walsh and I were diagnosed with Usher syndrome, a form of deaf/blindness, in 1997. Our parents turned to the Foundation Fighting Blindness (FFB), co-founded by Gordon Gund. I met Gordon and watched him build FFB into the preeminent vision research foundation in the country. Gordon has Retinitis Pigmentosa. The same condition that causes blindness in Usher syndrome. His passion was to find a cure but in his efforts he also developed a platform for those who are blind or have low vision. Gordon is a respected businessman, financier, and past owner of professional sports teams. I started Flight for Sight in 2014 on a personal mission to raise awareness and see the world before I lost my sight. In 2022, it became a 501(c)(3). We award $10,000 travel grants to individuals who are blind or have low vision. Applicants pitch their ideas for travel projects that will benefit the blind and low vision community. We have awarded six grants so far. In 2023, I spoke with Gordon about Flight for Sight and he provided a $30,000 matching grant through the Gordon and Llura Gund Foundation. We successfully matched it. In June, we updated Gordon on our progress and future plans. He was pleased with our results and efforts. He was delighted to hear about our new board member Mike May, another successful businessman, accomplished athlete, and travel expert. Gordon quickly responded with another matching grant pledge, this time for $60,000. We have until the end of 2024 to raise? $60,000, a much shorter time frame than the first grant but we are up to the challenge! The essence of a nonprofit is continually proving its community impact and raising funds to sustain and grow its efforts. We aim to continue providing grants for individuals who are blind or have low vision to conduct projects that spread awareness and build community. With successful completion of the matching grant, we will be expanding our infrastructure for long term growth. We are going to rebrand, hire digital expertise, and expand our video content. At the same time, we will not lose focus on serving our grant winners and giving them what they need to be successful. It is an exciting time for Flight for Sight. We are proud of what we have accomplished and have made a significant difference for the blind and visually impaired.? We cannot do it alone. We need your help, not only to meet the challenge grant but to build a strong foundation that will allow us to do more for a community that has ideas to improve the lives of individuals who are blind or have low vision.?? We have announced our $10,000 travel grant winners for 2024! Learn more about our winners below and via the Instagram reels they created. Link in the comments! The Lamarra Family applied for a Flight for Sight grant in 2023 and while they did not win, they were inspired to launch an Instagram account called "Yes_I_Cane", which showcases visually impaired siblings Mina and Brennan sharing their lives and experiences through engaging and often humorous videos. This year the family, which includes mom Parisa and dad Bart, will be traveling to Japan to learn about accessibility in Tokyo and Anjo. Anjo is the sister city of the family’s home town of Huntington Beach, CA, and they will be bringing back recommendations on accessibility for Huntington Beach’s upcoming downtown redesign. Grayson Roberts just turned 10 and is the founder of Limitless Lemonade, a company he started to raise money to finance his own trips to experience the world. He just got back from walking the Great Wall of China! His Flight for Sight trip, Grayson and his mom Terica will be traveling to Ghana, Africa, to donate white canes and learn about conditions for blind and VI individuals in a developing country. Our advisor, Mike May, has connected them with Stevie Wonder, who is passionate about Ghana, and we hope he will be involved in their project somehow. Ted Tahquechi lost his vision in a car accident, which forced him to change directions in life. Ted, along with his wife Carrie and guide dog Fauna, will travel the US to photograph famous locations to turn into tactile prints using a new technology he developed with funding from the Andy Warhol Foundation. The project will culminate in an accessible gallery show with traditional and tactile photos side-by-side, along with audio description. He operates a popular website called Blind Travels where visually impaired people share travel tips.
