Today, Flexport Head of Trucking Bill Driegert sat down with FreightWaves CEO Craig Fuller at the F3: Future of Freight Festival in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Between the evolution of the digital trucking brokerage space and the state of the freight recession, the two industry veterans covered a lot of ground. Our key takeaways: ?? Technology has completely transformed the trucking market. With the rise of AI and automation, we’re seeing rapid democratization of tech tools and continued adoption among carriers since the pandemic. ?? Historically, for brokers, working with owner-operators has been one of the most challenging pieces of the puzzle. The Convoy app provides carriers an automated end-to-end experience, in turn giving brokers easy access to a vast pool of capacity and significantly lowering the costs of sourcing carriers. “In five years, this is going to be the model for every broker,” Bill said. ?? Freight fraud remains a massive headache for the industry. The Convoy Platform has built the best fraud prevention capabilities, in part because our app-centric approach allows us to leverage data to proactively weed out bad actors and create a safer and more controlled marketplace. ?? The relaunched Convoy Platform pivoted to enable brokers to use technology to source from a vast, reliable pool of carriers. “We can bring a lot of value to the market as a neutral platform connecting brokers and carriers,” Bill said. At last week's Sourcing Journal Fall Summit, Thomas P.C. Kempf, Flexport’s Senior Director of Global Air Freight, explored how potential changes to the de minimis rule may impact the cost structure of ecommerce businesses in 2025 and beyond. For bigger ecommerce players that ship by air, the potential changes could mean “around a 20% cost increase on a SKU-level basis,” Thomas explained. “And the bigger players would probably have more tools in the toolbox to absorb those increased costs.” ??
