Today, Daffy is taking a bold step to help unlock ?? the $2.2 trillion trapped in private stock for charity. Introducing the Daffy Private Stock Donation Program ?? Since 1996, the number of public companies has dropped by over 50% and companies are staying private longer. While this is a phenomenal economic achievement, it also has some unintended consequences: Employees paid with private stock can't access this wealth until a liquidity event. High-quality companies have responded to these changes by arranging tender offers and structured secondary sales to help their employees access some liquidity to pay off student loans or purchase a home—but what about #philanthropy? The few #donoradvisedfund providers that can support private stock, primarily focus on the ultra-wealthy, with every transaction a one-off bespoke process that can take up to 12 weeks. One month ago we open sourced Instant, and had one of the largest Show HN’s for a YC company. Today we're announcing a $3.4M seed round. We’re backed by YCombinator, SV Angel, and a number of technical angels, including James Tamplin, the original CEO of Firebase, Paul Graham, Co-founder of YCombinator, Greg Brockman, Co-founder of OpenAI, and Jeff Dean, chief scientist of Google DeepMind. ## What is Instant? Instant is a Modern Firebase. You write queries, and Instant handles the auth, permissions, data caching, and reactivity for you. You get SDKs for React, RN, and vanilla JS. Since launch, folks are already hacking community packages for Svelte and Vue too! ## How does it look? You can start with less than 10 lines of code. If you use React, replace `useState` with `useQuery`, and you get persistence and reactivity out of the box. ## Want to try it yourself? You can take Instant for a spin without even signing up. Go to the site, and click “Try the demo”. We’ll spin up a database you can play with in less than 200 milliseconds! ## Years in the making Building Instant has been a winding journey. Joe Averbukh and I met in 2014. We quickly became best friends, and senior and staff engineers at Facebook and Airbnb together. When we worked at Facebook, most designers used Sketch. At that time no one thought there could be something better. Figma came out and changed the game. Similarly, in the 2010s, Evernote was one of the best note taking apps. In 2024 most people use Notion instead. Features like multiplayer, optimistic updates, and offline mode are what differentiate the best apps. Right now they're a big schlep to build, but they don't have to be. With the right kind of infrastructure, you get these features out of the box. That’s what we’re building with Instant, a platform to build applications of the future. At alphaXiv, we’re building a platform that allows students, researchers, and industry experts to ask questions and exchange ideas directly on top of arXiv papers, the largest pre-print repository in the world. Over the last year, the journey has been nothing short of exhilarating. What started as a final project for CS193X has evolved into a platform with tens of thousands of researchers around the world sharing, discussing, and critiquing research papers. We’re also thrilled to share that we’ll soon begin a collaboration with arXiv as an arXiv Labs project! Along the way, we’ve been inspired by the rapid growth of our community through LinkedIn, Twitter, and Hacker News, with industry leaders such as Yann LeCun, Jack Dorsey, and many others expressing excitement for the project.
