We are thrilled to welcome our Year One cohort to the Fletcher Construction Graduate Programme! During an engaging two-day induction workshop, our new graduates had the chance to connect with senior leaders who shared insights into the scope and strength of Fletcher Building’s diverse business units. They also delved into our core corporate values, which guide our interactions within teams, with customers, and in the wider community. They enjoyed the opportunity to network with our Year Two graduates, who generously shared their experiences and stories from their time with Fletcher Construction, Brian Perry Civil, and Higgins. Year One has eight females, which is a positive step towards our goal of increasing the number of women in Fletcher Construction. Our grads are: with Fletcher Construction, Maria Vaefaga, Samantha Kuijpers, Isa Caresosa; with Brian Perry Civil, Milla Huang, Papamama Pokinio, Dara Patrick, Trishalia Moodley, Jayjay Huang, Shereen Audiss; and with Higgins, Xin Tian Chia, Nicole Lizardo, Una Tuimoala.

East Auckland’s new flyover stands tall after one year of construction. Aucklanders using one of New Zealand’s busiest intersections can now see the new flyover being built above them which will help nearly halve congestion, making car and bus trips quicker and easier as part of Auckland Transport’s (AT) Eastern Busway project. Work first began in March 2024 on the flyover (named Rā Hihi – meaning sun’s rays) which is under construction near the Pakūranga town centre. It now spans Tī Rākau Drive at the busy South Eastern Highway intersection, after a three-night operation to install eight large concrete beams using the country’s largest mobile crane. Once fully complete, Rā Hihi will directly connect Pakūranga Road with the South Eastern Highway, making the extension of the Eastern Busway from Pakūranga towards Botany, and a shared path, possible. Together this is expected to reduce traffic congestion at Pakūranga town centre by up to 40% during peak times. The Eastern Busway project is being delivered by an alliance of Auckland Transport with Fletcher Construction, ACCIONA, AECOM, and Jacobs in partnership with mana whenua.

The Eastern Busway project team installed eight large concrete beams during three nights in February to form the span of Rā Hihi (flyover) above Tī Rākau Drive in Pakūranga. The logistics to place the beams safely and accurately required months of careful preparation and a sizeable team of specialists and equipment to ensure every part of the complex sequence went smoothly. New Zealand’s largest mobile crane lifting the spans ran on 100% hydrogenated vegetable oil instead of diesel for this work, reducing its carbon emissions by 70%. The Eastern Busway project is being delivered by an alliance of Auckland Transport with Fletcher Construction, ACCIONA, AECOM, and Jacobs in partnership with mana whenua.

50 years with Higgins. Congratulations, Mike Morgan.
Foreperson Michael Morgan recently celebrated an incredible career milestone – 50 years with the Green Team. Mike began his journey as a digger operator for Higgins Levin and has remained with the branch throughout his entire career. Branch Manager Johan van Wyk commends Mike for his dedication. "Mike deserves to be immensely proud for being at the same contact address for half a century. He has installed an incredible amount of infrastructure in the Levin township, including storm water, wastewater, and water mains, and has collaborated with many Council engineers on their contracts." With his extensive experience in drain laying, Mike has often been called upon to assist other Higgins branches in Rotorua, Masterton, Wellington, and Palmerston North. Johan adds, "Mike is a pillar amongst the contractor community, a man of many talents." Higgins Levin honoured Mike during the team’s monthly share meeting, celebrating his achievements with his whānau, friends, and old colleagues.

Rakairoa Joyce joined Fletcher Construction’s summer internship programme and was assigned to Higgins on the Transport Rebuild East Coast Alliance. Over the past three months, Rakairoa has been deeply involved in the region’s roading and rail recovery works following Cyclone Gabrielle. Reflecting on her internship, Rakairoa expressed her gratitude for the invaluable learning experiences. "I have learnt about erosion and sediment controls, health and safety requirements, surveying basics, construction of anchor walls, effective planning and management skills, quality assurance and material compliance, costing, plant and equipment used, and the importance of daily reporting," she shared. One of the highlights of her journey was working on Devil’s Elbow on State Highway 2. "I’ve seen firsthand the extent of how the role of an engineer encompasses everything: quality, health and safety, cost, iwi engagement - the list goes on.” Rakairoa felt intimidated entering the internship by the large scope of the works, but she emerged with newfound confidence. "I have come out on the other side of my internship with more confidence, and a bunch of new connections that I hope to cross paths with again in the future!"

Since October 2022, the Eastern Busway project has utilised 1,027,330 litres of diesel and continues to make strides in reducing fuel consumption. Over the past two years, we've saved 41,000 litres of diesel, approximately 3%, through innovative practices. These include using a hybrid digger, reducing the number of generators, and ensuring that trucks and trailers carry full loads of excavated material on their return trips to the base. The Eastern Busway project is being delivered by an alliance of Auckland Transport with Fletcher Construction, ACCIONA AECOM and Jacobs in partnership with mana whenua.

Pride in Network Fridays - #innovativemindset #roadmanagement
Our Bay of Plenty team has launched "Pride in Network Fridays” as a chance to highlight the often-overlooked aspects of road management. These include the important tasks such as litter removal, minor road repairs, maintaining roadside areas, and all the tasks that create cleaner and safer roads. On the launch day of this initiative Network Manager Varunesh Sinha and Asset Manager Ian Smit led two dedicated crews, including some office-based managers, and they targeted key areas on State Highways 5 and State Highway 38. They picked up litter, repaired potholes and a low shoulder, and inspected a historical pavement repair. Since its launch in October, this initiative has already proven to boost team morale and ownership, resulting in greater attention to detail from the team.
