An extaceullar matrix scaffold derived from umbicilcal cord tissue was tested in dogs and humans with rotator cuff injuries ????♀?Patients received autologous MSC injections to treat Achilles tendinopathy as part of a phae IIa clinical trial ?? Researchers compared skeletal stem cells and mesenchymal stromal cells in their ability to heal rotator cuff injury in a very thorough (and very large) mouse study (n = 56!) Scientists at Stanford recently developed new "HyTEC" implants for the controlled delivery of Bone Morphogenetic Protein-2 for use in bone regeneration. Their large animal pilot study demonstrated it was 4.5 times more effective than the current clinical gold standard for delivering BMP-2. What makes it so effective? I am a lazy scientist! And I know I’m not the only one. The last thing I wanted to do during my busy days running experiments was comb through the literature for new papers. As a lazy scientist, I loved Twitter! It delivered new publications, some of which I may never have found searching on my own, directly to my feed. As many of us (Forbes says about 30% of users) step away from “X” though—either partially or completely—using it as a resource for keeping up with the tissue engineering field is becoming less and less attractive. in 2021, 820,000 animals were used in research experiments in the United States. From screening therapies to cultured meat production, novel bioreactors have the potential to significantly reduce that number, both in our research and food production systems. As someone who's never used a bioreactor, I initially set out to learn more about what bioreactors are. But these three brilliant PhDs (or soon to be PhDs) ended up teaching me less about what bioreactors are and more about the incredible things bioreactors can do. These researchers are developing perfusion bioreactors as an alternative to animal experiments, using mechanically-loading bioreactors to tease out the relationship between intervertebral disc injury and inflammation ex vivo, and scaling tissue-engineered fat production in a way you may not have imagined.
