  • When Marie’s husband, John, was diagnosed with cancer, their lives were turned upside down. It wasn’t until they traced his illness to a household product they had trusted for years that Marie realized they needed help—not only to cover medical costs but to hold the manufacturer accountable. • Sandra Day O’Connor made history as the first woman nominated and confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court. A graduate of Stanford Law School, she served on the Board of Editors for the Stanford Law Review. Despite her qualifications, O’Connor faced gender-based hiring discrimination and initially worked for free as the San Mateo County Attorney. In 1965, she became an Assistant Attorney General for Arizona, and in 1969, she was appointed to a vacant seat in the Arizona State Senate. She was later re-elected twice, becoming the first female majority leader in any state senate. In 1981, President Ronald Reagan nominated O’Connor to the U.S. Supreme Court, and she was unanimously confirmed by the Senate.

  • Belva Lockwood was a trailblazing attorney and the first woman to run for U.S. president. She enrolled at the National University Law School in Washington, D.C., at age 40, completing her degree in 1873. However, the university initially refused to grant her a diploma due to her gender. In 1876, the U.S. Supreme Court denied her admission to the bar, stating that only men could practice before the court. Undeterred, Lockwood lobbied male attorneys and members of Congress to pass legislation allowing women to be admitted to the bar. Her efforts led to the passage of the “Lockwood Bill” in 1879, and the following year, she became the first woman to argue before the U.S. Supreme Court in Kaiser v. Stickney (102 U.S. 176).?

  • Charlotte E. Ray is recognized as the first female attorney in U.S. history. She pursued legal studies at Howard University, despite the widespread exclusion of women from the bar. In 1872, she became Howard’s first Black woman legal graduate and gained admission to the District of Columbia bar, making history. Although she faced significant challenges in securing clients due to both her gender and race, Ray became the first woman to argue a case before the District of Columbia Supreme Court in 1875 with Gadley v. Gadley.

  • At Fleming, Nolen & Jez, we believe in fighting for those who can’t fight for themselves. It’s at the heart of what we do every day. And naturally, we admire those who dedicate their lives to the same mission. This morning, we were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our dear friend, Sylvester Turner. He was a champion for the people— a Texas House Representative, our Mayor of Houston, and most recently, a United States Congressman. Like Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, who previously represented the same district in congress, and who sadly passed away not even one year ago, Turner had an unwavering commitment to public service and left a lasting impact on the countless lives he touched. https://lnkd.in/gmiEvk-c
