Our current behavioural science project with the Julia Anderson Training Programme (JATP) Trainees is exploring what the public understand by “take exactly as prescribed” on their antibiotic prescription. Caitlin Murphy and Arlette Albert have been working with our Behavioural Science Lead, Dr Kate Grailey, to recruit and work with members of the public, with a focus on improving antimicrobial stewardship. "One bit of learning that I think we've all probably done is this idea of decentralised testing. Most of us have been to a carpark, at a fairground, and had a COVID test kit passed through the window. A slight modification of that is the idea of setting up an acute respiratory infection hub, where you'd have a healthcare centre that's not part of an acute healthcare provider and its function is to provide that testing service... It will also help us make better decisions around how we use antibiotics, because if there's an acute viral infection there's no point in using antibiotics to try and treat it." Dr Jon Otter, Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London and a longstanding collaborator of Professor Alison Holmes (Director of the Fleming Initiative),?highlighted decentralised testing and antibiotic stewardship in a discussion for?BBC Radio 4's Inside Health on how the COVID-19 pandemic changed medicine. Jon was joined in this discussion by Dr Emma Wall (University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust)?and Professor Katrina Pollock (Oxford Vaccine Group). Professor Alison Holmes, Director of the Fleming Initiative, is senior author on a paper recently published by Lancet Digital Health as the Editor’s pick. Dr Damien Ming, the paper's first author said "We analysed routine healthcare data from 20,000+ patients at Imperial College London to train our AI model, which allows us to predict serious bacterial infections in patients quicker than existing lab tests. This could mean faster diagnosis, quicker treatment and smarter antibiotic use – crucial for better patient care and fighting antimicrobial resistance." Dr Kate Grailey, the Fleming Initiative's Behavioural Science Lead, joined the closing panel of the?9th AMR Conference, hosted by the BEAM Alliance, about the role of communication in antimicrobial resistance. Moderated by Dr Becky McCall, the panellists Dr Grailey, Diane Shader Smith, and Dr Francesca Chiara discussed the importance of making AMR relevant to the public, the significance of who delivers the message, and being bold in our engagement and communications strategies - the sky is the limit! The discussion was interspersed with videos, including the trailer for 'Salt in my Soul (2022)' and a testimonial from American actor Bill Pullman on his motivation for wanting to raise the profile of AMR: showcasing the power of novel communication and telling human stories. It was a fantastic and inspiring session - and food for thought for us all to think about how we can better communicate AMR in every aspect of our work. The discovery of penicillin is attributed to Fleming, Florey and Chain whose work has helped save the lives of millions. But if it weren't for the pioneering Dorothy Hodgkin we wouldn't know the structure of penicillin or its beta-lactam ring, which has enabled us to create generations of antibiotics. On International Women's Day, we are pleased to say that the Fleming Initiative and CSIRO are working together to recognise the many, and often underappreciated, efforts of women globally in tackling antimicrobial resistance through our new Trailblazers programme. "The Female Trailblazers in AMR initiative will showcase the diverse contributions of women across this spectrum, from research and development to education, policy, communications, law, and more", said Professor Brett Sutton (CSIRO Director of Health & Biosecurity).
