Flansburgh Architects is honored to announce that the Bill ’67 and Peter ’71 Alfond Coastal Research Center at The Governor's Academy has been recognized with a Merit Award. The award was presented at the annual AIA New England Design Awards ceremony, hosted by AIA Maine last weekend in Portland, Maine. Members of the design team were joined at the event by Jon Douglas, CFO of Governor’s Academy, to celebrate this achievement. The jury shared the following comments about the project. Thoughtfully and accessibly sited within the sprawling Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, the Coastal Research Center employs a material and detailing strategy along with multi-sensory and highly immersive learning environment. One that may create a higher level of awareness of the visitor’s surroundings.??Even with photographs alone this building evokes those sensory feelings; that it will inspire deep connections to the world that it aims to help to protect. The Center is situated in the Refuge’s complex landscape in a way that communicates a lite touch, a subtle presence, and that offers an orienting, panoramic view over the landscape and varied watercourse biomes, promising a rich hands-on learning experience. The building’s use of sustainable materials, passive cooling strategies, and educational features like bio-swales and a floating dock reflect a commitment to both ecological stewardship and community engagement. The new Middle School and STEAM Design Center at Saigon South International School in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, has been featured on Architectural Record.
No matter your age, the phrase “middle school” likely evokes unrequited crushes, sweaty palms, and awkward encounters that might be equal parts excruciating and euphoric. The intense social dynamics of middle school take up a lot of tween headspace, and a newly opened building at the Saigon South International School gives students a physical space to match. Designed by Flansburgh Architects (@flansburgharchitects), the program of the 184,000-square-foot middle school building revolves around a light-filled atrium, a gathering place where young people can hang out in a safe, supervised environment. The central space shares the teen-appeal of a shopping mall—a public area to see and be seen—but rather than Abercrombie and Aeropostale, this atrium is flanked by state-of-the-art facilities for academics and athletics.? ? Located in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, the school is part of the roughly 640-acre Saigon South district planned by SOM in the mid-1990s. The plan aimed to attract young families as residents, so the best parcels of the plan in the bends along the Rach Dia River were dedicated to new schools. Flansburgh, a Boston based-firm with a reputation for designing international schools, created the 2.5-acre master plan for the Saigon South International School project and subsequently was awarded the design of two buildings, the middle school and a smaller STEAM center for high schoolers. ? ? The Flansburgh team recently visited the Bill ’67 and Peter ’71 Alfond Coastal Research Center at The Governor's Academy’s Academy in Byfield, MA. The tour was jointly led by the Director of the Bass Institute, the Director of Facilities, and the Design Team. The group explored the facility and learned how the center has become a focal point for interdisciplinary learning, supporting not only the sciences, but also art, math, history, and student well-being. The center’s connection to the Great Marsh enhances its serene atmosphere, offering students a retreat for focused study. Through partnerships with various organizations, the center hosts guest scientists and supports conservation efforts, including a program researching Blanding’s turtles, a threatened species in Massachusetts.? Highlights of the tour included visiting the wet lab, and the exploring the facility’s connection to the surrounding ecosystem. The team enjoyed strolling on the elevated, low-impact ramp through the woodland, an environmentally sensitive transition to the coastal marsh. Along this path, students have developed an educational nature walk, offering signage to inform visitors about the local flora and fauna. Envisioning the Future at Escola Americana de Campinas David Croteau and Madeleine Le recently visited Escola Americana de Campinas (EAC) to begin the development of a new master plan. Immersed in the verdant 15-acre campus, The Flansburgh team participated in an in-depth tour of the campus grounds, capturing photographs of the rich landscapes, architectural forms, local materials, and cherished spaces that define the school's character. Following the tour they began the collaborative journey of visioning, engaging with students, user groups, and school leadership. Through dialogue and interaction, they gathered valuable insights and ideas, laying the foundation for the planning process. EAC is an independent, non-profit, co-educational day school in Campinas, Brazil, serving students ages 2 to 19.
