Commemorating the end of WW1 and honoring all US veterans and soldiers today in NYC. On this solemn November 11th, the Delegation of Flanders to the USA proudly joined the Veterans Day ceremonies in NYC, to reflect on the courage and sacrifices of all veterans. This event also stands as a strong reminder of the lasting bond between Flanders and the US. The Delegation took part in the wreath-laying ceremony at Madison Square Park, paying tribute to those who fought and continue to fight for peace and freedom. Afterwards, we joined the Veterans Day Parade alongside the mayor of NYC Eric Adams and veterans from all over the world. #veteransday #usa #flandersnyc

On the last day of the Diplomatic ‘Return Days’ 2024, Brussels hosted the first official meeting between the members of the new Vlaamse Regering / Government of Flanders and Flemish diplomats, Economic Representatives of Flanders Investment & Trade (FIT) and Representatives of Toerisme Vlaanderen - VISITFLANDERS active abroad. ? ? This meeting marked an important step towards an even stronger position of Flanders abroad. Minister-president Matthias Diependaele stressed the importance of strategic cooperation and a strong Flemish presence on the world stage: "Diplomacy, trade relations and international cooperation are crucial for Flemish wealth creation. The Government of Flanders wants to respond to this with an ambitious, impactful and values-driven international Flemish policy". ? The day also provided the perfect opportunity to celebrate the new laureates of the Diplomatic Academy of the Department of Chancellery and Foreign Affairs. They were intensively trained and prepared for their role in Flanders' diplomatic service over the past months. The Minister-president presented the ‘Uilenspiegelichting’ laureates with a certificate for their successful participation. ? Starting today, the Diplomatic Representatives of Flanders are back in their own country for a week. They have come over from Flanders' 13 representations around the world??. The aim: to continuously strengthen the Flemish international network. This is important in a world where economic competition, security and technological innovation are constantly coming together in new ways.? ? During these ‘return days’, our diplomats not only have the opportunity to meet each other in person, but also colleagues within the Flemish government and other partners. A unique opportunity to think about Flanders' role on the international stage and to look ahead together. ? By exploring opportunities together, Flanders can tap into new markets, enter into new collaborations and find new ways to send our expertise and creativity into the world. After a warm welcome by secretary-general Julie Bynens, consultations with colleagues from head office are scheduled on this first day. Then the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten Antwerpen (KMSKA) will be the setting for a meeting with representatives of the cultural sector. ???? It’s a wrap! For 6 months I had the incredible opportunity to dive deeper into the intersection of #climate, #peace and #security. Working at the Climate, Peace and Security Unit within the UN Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) and the Climate Security Mechanism (#CSM)- a joint initiative by DPPA, DPO, UNDP and UN Environment Programme- has deepened my understanding of climate-related security risks, including their opportunities for peacebuilding. Here are a few of my standout moments of the past months: ?? ?? Assisting with the content and organisation of the recent climate, peace and security training for the United Nations Regional Office of Central Africa (UNOCA) and Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) ?? Coordinating with stakeholders in facilitating the launch of DPPA’s Climate, Peace and Security Dashboard ?? Monitoring and summarising key climate, peace and security-related developments during the UN General Assembly high-level week ?? Volunteering with the UN Department of Global Communications to assist at press conferences and the media center during the General Debate and high-level meetings of the General Assembly. ?? Attending an event on youth and climate, peace and security, hosted by UNDP in partnership with the CSM, Ausw?rtiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office) Germany, Ministero dell'Ambiente e della Sicurezza Energetica, Ministero degli Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione Internazionale, and adelphi. It’s worth keeping an eye on developments related to the recently established network to unite youth across the climate, peace and security fields led by Climate and Youth Activist, Nisreen Elsaim. A heartfelt shout out to my team Samuel Martell, Maha Skah, Japhet William Graham Eichel, Darragh Woods, Alexandra Fong and my CSM colleagues for their constant encouragement and support. This experience would have definitely not been the same without you!
