    Co-owner FlamingTree Solutions, LLC; ISA Certified Arborist; SAF Community Urban & Community Forester; Wildland Fire Public Information Officer, Type 1/ CIM;

    I recently passed my Society of American Foresters Certified Urban & Community Forester exam. This certification pathway includes individuals who have years of forestry experience, but no forestry degree, as well as those with forestry degrees. Suffice it to say, I've picked up a thing or two living around foresters for the last 30 years and through FlamingTree Solutions, LLC. the last 6 years. The lesson here, be careful of the company you keep, lol. Thanks to all my many forestry friends and to Josh Shroyer, CF CUCF and Nathaniel Shroyer who are my constant supporters.

  • Why? Were these trees in the wrong place? Did they do something wrong? Was this just a cse of the tree owner not knowing what they were asking for, or maybe an untrained employee? Regardless, the question still remains, why? While on one of our many travels, we saw these poor examples of tree management. Yes, I used the term management. Management as we use it just means a decision to do, or not do, something. Sometimes, the best management of a tree is to do nothing. Sometimes, that decision will be to prune on the tree. Management of a tree can be good, or bad. When we talk about tree management, I think we should talk about things like prescriptive management. What is the best "prescription" for a particular tree to keep it not only healthy and providing the many benefits we enjoy from trees, but also balancing what we as a society need. This could be shade on a hot parking lot. It could also be pruning limbs so we can see a critical stop sign at an intersection. This post could go on, but for now, I will just let this marinate. Tree management should start long before a tree is even planted and continue throughout its entire life. Hopefully, we don't cut it shorter than it needs to be. I really wanted to stop in and ask my 'why" question, but I was about to be behind schedule on another project, so, while the place will remain undisclosed, maybe I will have time the next trip through.

    • A maple tree in a parking lot in an urban area that has been improperly pruned.
    • A pear tree near a parking lot in an urban area that has been improperly pruned leaving a misshapen tree.
  • Assisting a County Fair Board with some tree inspections during the off season. In the summer, this lawn can hold dozens, if not hundreds of people who will enjoy the shade of the trees so an occasional health check is a good, proactive approach to their tree management program.

  • When we manage our urban trees, do we focus on the overall canopy or the individual stems? OK, it is usually a bit of both. But, when you encounter this situation in your urban tree inventory, how do you record this? Trees 1 and 2 on the aerial are cottonwood and shown as each having 4 separate stems. Do you record as 1 tree, 1 multistem tree, or 4 individual trees each (8 total)? Then, if you are segmenting the crowns, how do you separate the crowns if you are separating the syems? On tree 3, a boxelder, is this a single tree, multistem tree or do you could each separate stem? We have clients on both ends of the spectrum as far as what they are looking for, but we would love to hear your thoughts and reasons for each way. #trees #forestry #urbanforestry #arboriculture

  • Whether it is thousands of acres, or less than a quarter acre back yard, utilizing the technology that is already available can give you so many more insights into a property and the trees and vegetation. In the ortho that was created by flying our Mavic 3M drone, you can see a wide variety of tree foliage colors. Which is healthy and which may be suffering? We also flew the separate multispectral mapping mission and performed a rapid stitching so we could run a NDVI analysis. The results show all but one tree being perfectly healthy. With the human eye able to see more shades of green than anything else, it can sometimes be difficult to quickly distinguish healthy versus unhealthy as well as natural variations of color within a species. This gives us one more tool in our tool box where we leverage technology to promote pro-active management practices. #trees #forests #forestry #urbanforestry #drones #arboriculture #arborist #treecare #esri

  • A wonderful time was had by FlamingTree Solutions, LLC. at the #SAF2024 (Society of American Foresters National Convention). It is exciting to be surrounded by over 1600 attendees, catch up with old friends, meeting new friends, seeing and learing about new technologies, and networking. Josh really enjoyed attending the first ever Certification Social for Certified Foresters and Certified Urban and Community Foresters. Nate had a great time at both the Student and Young Professionals gatherings. If you are in the tree or forestry industry, you should really consider membership in SAF as well as look into becoming Certified! A special Thank You to the many SAF Staff who spent some time talking with us and making the whole event a wonderful experience.
