Is Primer Required Before Applying FlameOFF? Fire Barrier Paint? Applying intumescent paint can raise questions, especially around primer requirements. Here’s some guidance to help you prepare surfaces effectively: 1. Wood Applications: No primer is required; however, we recommend an all-purpose acrylic primer to reduce absorption of the initial coat into the wood. Alternatively, applying a thin coat of our product first can seal the wood before applying the full mil thickness. 2. Drywall Applications: Primer is not necessary. But, if preferred, an all-purpose acrylic primer can be applied. 3. Steel Applications: Primer is essential! For structural steel, an alkyd metal primer is recommended. The test was conducted in accordance with the ASTM International fire- test-response Standard E-84 which is the technical equivalent of UL No. 723. As a result of the testing the cork board finished with FR Clear achieved a Flame Spread Rating of 30 and Smoke Development Index of 120 which equals to class B fire rating.
