NEWS: FitLab acquires Y7 Studio. The integrated wellness company adds Y7 Studio's heated, music-driven yoga chain to its growing portfolio — spanning studios, events, and equipment. • Last year, it acquired Assault Fitness. • It partnered with Nike to launch fitness studios. • It's expanding XPT Life with studios by Laird Hamilton. Simultaneously scaling strength studio Racked, HIIT boutique Sanctuary Fitness, and race series Ragnar, FitLab is building an interconnected experience tailored to modern wellness consumers.

The Quest for Wellness & Longevity Next up, I’d like to highlight FitLab's comprehensive solution for those seeking peak performance and longevity, XPT Life. Developed over decades by iconic waterman Laird Hamilton and volleyball legend Gabrielle Reece, with a network of the best minds in human performance, like Dr. Andy Galpin, Dr. Kelly Starrett, and Dan Garner, XPT is the most comprehensive performance system in the world. XPT has worked with elite athletes, special forces teams, and high-performing executives for years. Unfortunately, elite performance is incredibly difficult to scale. Most offerings end up being built around buzzy technologies or beautifully designed spaces, but fail to deliver on the substance that actually drives results. This year, XPT is launching three initiatives to address access, accountability, and depth. Performance Wellness Studios. Ice baths, saunas, and breathwork have been around for millennia. Science is beginning to understand why, and the compelling data supports traditional methods (e.g. ice baths, not cryo; traditional saunas, not IR; different breathing techniques for different objectives). In terms of whether they are “good,” to quote XPT advisor Dr. Andy Galpin on 90% of human performance questions: “it depends” on the intent and context. If you just trained and you are focused on maximizing adaptation, you probably shouldn’t hop right in an ice bath and minimize inflammation. XPT Studios’ private and group contrast therapy and breathwork sessions leverage XPT’s decades of experience and leadership to adapt to the unique intent of the user. Each protocol is built around specific doses of cold and heat exposure and targeted breathwork patterns, all delivered in a comprehensive audio experience. These specific protocols are customized to drive improvement in a desired area of well-being, including energy, mood, physical recovery, mental resilience, nervous system reset, and heart & health. Group classes in a shared space add a live coach and the power of community. XPT Expeditions. Expeditions are the ultimate opportunity to put every element of performance to the test. Over two days, participants learn how the world’s highest performers prepare to take on defining feats, and then face an epic challenge, with each event bringing unique terrain and a new trial. The first Expedition is this summer in Breckenridge, where participants get to conquer an unforgettable 11.1-mile trek to three of Colorado's near 14,000-foot peaks. XPT Apex. XPT’s most comprehensive offering, Apex provides an integrated approach to performance and longevity. Apex is a completely personalized solution designed to optimize movement, stress management, nutrition, and lifestyle, while correcting dysfunctions, to set the client up for lifetime of success. Apex members receive a combination of in-person and virtual coaching and community, with lab work for personalized nutrition and supplementation. PJ Nestler Eric Botsford

In my last post I complained about the overuse of terms like “authenticity” and “technology” in fitness, so let’s start with what I believe is the most genuinely authentic and technology-enabled offering in mainstream fitness, Nike Running Studios. Every year around this time we talk a lot about the future of fitness. It’s at-home, it’s hybrid, it’s strength, it’s wellness, it’s functional, it’s GLP-1s, it’s AI. The reality is that all of those things are true. 85% of gym members also workout at home. Strength training is growing. But so is pilates. And HIIT. And ice baths. And massage. And breathwork. And prescriptions. There is no one solution to rule them all, and we should stop debating it. It is time to focus more on why people pursue fitness and wellness (and why they don’t), and what the industry can do to help people be more successful in their pursuit. Here are a few things we know: - Depending on the data source, somewhere between 85%-97% of the fitness services market is spent on “in-person” activities (e.g. gym memberships, personal training, mass participation events, etc.) vs at-home (“digital”) offerings. - 67% of fitness participants prefer to train in groups. - The $530M global fitness market is transforming into the $5.2T global wellness market ($2.6T in U.S. alone). - A record 20% (72M) of Americans have a gym membership. That’s all great! The market is growing, people are training 2-3 modalities, they’re spending more than ever on a broader array of goods and services. Life is great. Except: - If 20% of Americans have a gym membership, that means 80% do not (and that number is higher outside the U.S). - Nearly 75% of Americans are now overweight or obese. 75% – and the percentage continues to climb. - 20% of American adults experienced symptoms of anxiety and depression; 40% of high school students had persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, and 20% seriously considered attempting suicide. That’s staggeringly bleak. The takeaway is that we are chasing wellness more than ever – especially younger generations – but we’re actually having less and less success achieving it. Spending is way up and success is way down. Everyone in fitness & wellness says “community.” Everyone says “authenticity.” These words don’t even mean anything anymore. The new words are some blend of “hybrid/technology/AI,” and those words have already come to mean even less. Other industries learned decades ago that it isn’t about the “technology.” It isn’t “digital” or “AI” fitness. It’s about how we can harness new capabilities to provide actual value to our members; not just a thing we can do with technology that doesn’t actually address an underlying need, or simply provides a check-the-box solution that will never really help anyone succeed. Over the next week, I’m going to post about some of my favorite things we’re doing at FitLab to try to help our members reach their goals. Because hey, the future of fitness & wellness is now…again.
