From our Permanent Collection: Evoking Eleanor Evoking Eleanor explores the art, life, and legacy of one of Fitchburg’s most beloved citizens: FAM Founder Eleanor Norcross (1854-1923). Her own paintings and carefully-acquired objects form the original core of the Fitchburg Art Museum’s collection, and her vision for an arts center in this city remains the driving force behind FAM’s mission today. Although she did not live to see her dream of opening an art center fulfilled, her bequest of her collections and funds made it possible to open the Fitchburg Art Center in 1929 – “for the joy and inspiration of art.” In 1951 The Fitchburg Art Center became the Fitchburg Art Museum, where Eleanor’s legacy lives on. #FitchburgArtMuseum #ArtLovers #CreativeCommunity #ExploreFAM #FitchburgMA #FAMLearningLounge

Now on view at FAM: Tara Sellios | Ask Now the Beasts Ask Now the Beasts weaves together art historical, literary and biblical references to create Tara Sellios’s vision of an apocalyptic world. Sellios’s highly detailed still life photographs capture the beauty of the grotesque as skeletons fly, insects swarm, and dried flowers dance. The photographs of Ask Now the Beasts are contemporary allegories of suffering and transcendence which share the Apocalypse as their metaphorical foundation. Through allusions to a variety of sources and her unique materials, Sellios deploys both dark humor and empathy in her poignant observations about the human condition and the complexities of religious extremism.
