Thanks, Froukje Kruijssen, for this great reflection on the HRDD in Seafood Supply Chains work that FishWise developed. Congrats to our SR Team led by Kelley K. Bell. The recording is available here (https://lnkd.in/eXdURchA).
I finaly watched the recording of the webinar "Fundamentals for Human Rights Due Diligence in Seafood Supply Chains" (https://lnkd.in/eRepQ96a), organised by RISE of FishWise and led by Kelley K. Bell with a great panel, that I was unable to attend last year. It turned out to be highly insightful and interesting. Some of my key takeaways:? ? A culture shift is needed in #seafood supply chains for #HRDD that opens the conversation about challenges in supply chains related to human rights and takes this to a pre-competitive space. ? This shift should start with a commitment to human rights at the level of the CEOs of seafood companies. ? Giving more agency to #workers to address issues themselves means less effort for companies to do so.? ? Rights awareness among workers is a key component. ? Action should take place adapted to the local level context and with local partners that understand it and speak the language of (migrant) workers.? ? Long-term partnerships with suppliers are needed that lower the risk of suppliers competing on price at the cost of workers' rights. ? Grievance mechanisms are essential but are often not trusted and/or understood by workers. I also appreciated this supplemental resource they shared: https://lnkd.in/erC2va_7 Definitely some key essentials to think about as we further build Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC)’s worker voice programme Clare Stevens Annabel Mulder

How it works: By cross-referencing fishing vessel and product sourcing data across multiple databases, including Global Fishing Watch's Vessel Viewer, we can pinpoint areas of concern related to environmental sustainability, IUUF, and human rights. Justice for the United 6 continues to push for the remediation of violations—trafficking, wage theft, debt bondage, loss of benefits, and violations of contract—endured by workers recruited by Pescadores International, a Philippines-based agency. Ongoing since early 2024, this campaign seeks not only to bring justice to the 6 workers originally affected in this case but also to prevent the exploitation of workers in seafood supply chains the world over. Learn how you can support the campaign here. https://lnkd.in/eiTZytPU

We are thrilled to see this new announcement from Whole Foods Market, addressing persistent labor and human rights challenges in seafood supply chains by setting labor practices and human rights standards for its seafood suppliers. FishWise's Social Responsibility Division Director, Kelley K. Bell, who was an advisor to this initiative, said, "Congratulations to Whole Foods for delivering a cutting-edge Seafood Code of Conduct that focuses on the worker's needs and rights, explicitly outlining the Whole Foods stance on key, emerging topics, including responsible recruitment and WiFi on vessels. There should be no confusion about the expectations of those who are a part of the Whole Foods seafood supply chain. We are proud to have consulted on this process."
