Avian Flu & Your Pets We’ve received questions about Avian Influenza (HPAI) and how it affects pets. Here’s what you need to know, based on information from the IN State Board of Animal Health and the AVMA: Cats & Dogs Both cats and dogs can be susceptible to avian influenza, with cats being at much higher risk than dogs. Dogs may experience respiratory symptoms, fever, and flu-like illness. While no cases have been documented, the greatest risk comes from consuming raw milk or raw food diets. There is no specific treatment—only supportive care. Cats infected with HPAI can show neurologic signs such as tremors, seizures, incoordination, and even death. Cats living on dairy or poultry farms where the virus has been detected are at higher risk. Humans working on affected farms may also carry the virus on clothing or shoes, increasing exposure. How to Protect Your Pets: -Avoid feeding raw milk, undercooked, or raw meat to pets. -Keep cats from hunting or consuming wild birds. -If you work around poultry or dairy farms, change clothes and clean shoes before coming home.
