Social engagement helps to keep the brain in good working order, a wealth of evidence suggests. Now a new study shows just how beneficial social activities can be. It found that among older adults who developed dementia or other serious memory problems, those who regularly engaged in social activities like visiting friends, going to parties, dining out, attending church, traveling or playing bingo developed memory impairments, on average, five years later than their less socially active peers. #BrainHealth #AlzheimersPrevention #StaySocial #HealthyAging #CognitiveHealth #MentalWellness #SocialConnections #DementiaAwareness #Neuroscience #Longevity

Music can be an easy and inexpensive way to lower stress and ease agitation in people with advanced Alzheimer’s disease, according to a new report. The findings add to growing evidence that music can play an important role in dementia care. For the study, researchers in Britain reviewed medical studies exploring the effects of music on people with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. The researchers also surveyed health care professionals and dementia specialists on the role of music in dementia care and interviewed staff and music therapists working in memory care centers. Music therapists are trained to identify specific ways that music, including singing, playing instruments or listening to songs, can improve care. #MusicTherapy, #AlzheimersCare, #DementiaCare, #MentalHealthAwareness, #ElderCare, #CaregiverSupport, #TherapeuticMusic, #MemoryCare, #SeniorWellbeing, #AlzheimersResearch

A growing number of studies have implicated air pollution as a risk factor for the onset of dementia. Now a new report found that one type of air pollution may be particularly bad for the brain: wildfire smoke. Researchers analyzed the health records of more than 1.2 million people aged 60 and older who were living in southern California between 2008 and 2019. All were free of dementia at the start of the study period. Over the ensuing decade, some developed Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. #AirPollution #WildfireSmoke #DementiaAwareness #AlzheimersResearch #BrainHealth #EnvironmentalHealth #PM25Pollution #ClimateChangeImpact

Take a moment to look out the window. Chances are, you’ll be able to tell the time of year by what you see—whether tree branches are leafy or barren, for instance, or whether the ground is covered with snow. However, for a person with Alzheimer’s disease, seasonal changes in their surroundings can lead to discomfort and confusion. And it’s not just the outdoors that evolves. Holiday decor, guests and festivities can alter the inside of a home, too. As the scenery around them shifts, it’s easier for people with Alzheimer’s disease to become disoriented, which can lead to wandering. As many as six in 10 people with dementia will stray from their caregivers at some point. This can be dangerous and even deadly under any circumstances, but extreme weather increases the hazard. #AlzheimersAwareness #DementiaCare #CaregiverSupport #WanderingPrevention #SafetyTips #CaregiverLife #EndAlzheimers #SupportCaregivers #WinterSafety #RaiseAwareness Featured in our Preserving Your Memory? magazine, https://lnkd.in/eqwtrDmf
