Nestled in the serene, wooded landscape along Huebner Road in San Antonio’s Shavano Park,?Woodland Church?is undergoing an exciting renovation and expansion to enhance its visibility along the busy corridor and better serve its growing congregation. The addition will not only strengthen the church’s street presence but also provide a vibrant, functional space for fellowship before and after services. The new lobby will be built to create a striking appeal along Huebner Road, with expansive glass panels and modern materials that integrate seamlessly with the church’s existing design, encouraging connection and interaction among parishioners. The existing lobby will be incorporated into the Sanctuary, opening more space for worshippers and allowing natural light to flood the interior through a large window previously dedicated to the lobby. Thoughtful updates to the Sanctuary will improve acoustics, lighting, and seating arrangements, creating a more comfortable and immersive worship experience while preserving the space’s spiritual and timeless character. These enhancements will allow the Sanctuary to accommodate a larger congregation without compromising its warm, reverent atmosphere. Additional updates include a redesign of the restrooms to offer more space and improved accessibility for all visitors. A new open library space will also be created just outside the Sanctuary, featuring custom shelving and flexible seating designed to foster quiet reflection, study, and community engagement. This inviting area will offer parishioners a dedicated space to connect with spiritual resources and one another, further enriching the church’s role as a hub for growth, learning, and fellowship.

St. Paul the Apostle Parish, a Catholic Church nestled on the cliff’s edge of Thanksgiving Mountain in Horseshoe Bay, Texas, is undergoing a transformative renovation and addition as a part of a multi-phase project. Originally conceived as an interdenominational space, the church has struggled to fully embody its Catholic identity. Our design intervention seeks to rectify this by introducing a new narthex, expanding the nave’s seating capacity, and reconfiguring the sanctuary to seamlessly accommodate liturgical functions. The integration of liturgical art throughout the space, coupled with the creation of a new font within a dedicated area, will further enhance the church’s spiritual character. Additionally, the project encompasses improvements to back-of-house infrastructure and site enhancements, ensuring a harmonious and functional environment for the parish community.

The Voelker / Sueltenfuss House is an 1860’s German fachwerk dwelling that has been carefully rehabilitated to ensure a more prosperous future. The modest structure has a robust history of uses including a regional post office in the late 1800s and more recently as a recreation center for the the Cordillera Ranch development that surrounds it. The scope involved removing everything that was doing harm to the building including its cementitious plaster, a rotting front porch, and modern additions that were not built well. Existing wood and stone work was carefully cleaned and stripped back to their natural state, while existing adobe infill walls were reinforced. The project was a true labor of love for the whole team and we can’t thank the owners enough for taking on such a project and letting us be involved. ?? : Sterling E. The new City of Cuero Thoroughfare project focuses on making the city’s downtown Main Street more accessible for visitors by transforming a vacant Art-Deco building into a public thoroughfare that links Main Street’s shops and restaurants to a generous public parking lot one block away. To achieve this, the existing building was gutted and new wide openings were created at each end, allowing for a seamless transition to a new landscaped walkway that also doubles as a narrow urban pocket park. New transom windows were reintroduced into the building’s front fa?ade, while the interior features a restored pressed metal ceiling w/ new lighting and industrial fans to promote consistent air flow through the building. Together the park space and the building support various community functions such as vendor markets and exhibit space, while also reducing the local heat island effect through the use of a white reflective roof and four large oak trees that will provide shade all year round. ?? : Sean Carranza Contractor: Weaver & Jacobs In Collaboration w/ Rialto Studio, Inc.
