The Robert E. Fischell Institute for Biomedical Devices aims to promote new methods of developing and launching new products to deliver improved care to millions, and improve the quality of healthcare in the U.S. - reducing costs, and improving patient access by advancing technology and regulatory science. A key component of the Institute is the Fischell Foundry, which brings together expertise in prototype development and navigating the device commercialization pathway through the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

This was a highly interdisciplinary/institutional effort, with Xin Xu & co-authors Dr. Chen-Yu Chen, Ph.D., Prof. Molly A. Carton, Paige C., Abdil Muhaymin Chowdhury & Prof. William Bentley from UMD, Yunxiu Qiu & Prof. Bryan R. Smith @ Institute for Quantitative Health Science and Engineering at MSU / Michigan State University, & Prof. Bidhan Bandyopadhyay @ U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs / VETERANS AFFAIRS MEDICAL CENTER. Historically, it has been difficult to manufacture microfluidic vessels in the lab that mimic both the sophisticated 3D architectures and sizes of #microvessels found in the body. This work introduces a hybrid 3D micro-nanoprinting approach for using “Two-Photon Direct Laser Writing (#2PP #DLW)” to nanoprint fully 3D microvessels directly atop #LCD-printed microfluidic chips. Importantly, we demonstrate that these #3D microvessels can be printed with: (??) fully circular vessel cross sections (100 μm in diameter), (??) tortuous architectures (e.g., spiraled, intertwined vessel paths), (??) thin (≤10 μm) vessel walls that include custom-designed micropores (5 μm in diameter), and (??) various photomaterials, including those based on polydimethylsiloxane (#PDMS)—one of the most widely used materials in the #microfluidics community. [We also show that this strategy is compatible with both UpNano GmbH and Nanoscribe DLW 3D printers!] We're excited for the potential that this new level of material and geometric verastility will enable new classes of 3D “??????????-????-??-????????” technologies to advance a wide array of biomedical applications, such as drug screening, disease modeling, and personalized medicine. The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy is advancing life-saving nanomedicine thanks to the support of the The National Institutes of Health. A new study published in Nature Communications by UMB faculty and a recent UMSOP graduate hypothesized that the stage of a disease—early, mid, or late—can influence the composition of biomolecules in a patient’s blood. This, in turn, affects how nanoparticles accumulate and interact with immune cells, ultimately impacting the therapeutic efficacy of nanoparticle-based drugs. "Our research addresses a key challenge in nanomedicine, which is understanding the variability between patient responses and the failure of targeted therapies, such as those aimed at treating cancer or inflammation," said Ryan Pearson, UMSOP associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences and director of the School of Pharmacy’s Bio- and Nano-Technology Center. #NIHSavesLives #SupportNIHxUMB #WeAreUMB #ChangingTheFutureToday
