On September 26, 2024, Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida's Big Bend area as a Category 4 storm, bringing catastrophic damage across the Southeast. With 140 MPH winds, a 15-foot storm surge, and up to 31 inches of rainfall, Helene caused severe flooding, landslides, and widespread devastation, tragically resulting in over 230 fatalities—more than half in North Carolina. At its peak, over four million people lost power. Answering the call for assistance, our Fischbach & Moore utility team mobilized on September 29th, first aiding in Indiana and then North Carolina. For 17 days, 29 of our skilled team members worked tirelessly alongside AES Indiana and Duke Energy Corporation, starting in Indianapolis and moving to Shelby and Spruce Pine, North Carolina. Equipped with 11 bucket trucks, three digger trucks, a track-drive digger derrick, and a mobile mechanic, our team covered over 4,000 miles, working 16-hour days to help restore power. Thanks to the resilience and kindness of the affected communities, our crews felt supported every step of the way. Many people, despite their losses, stopped to offer their help and gratitude, reminding us of the strength and unity that defines our communities. Our hearts go out to all those impacted by Hurricane Helene. We wish everyone the very best in their recovery journey.

The Railroad-SPS New England JV recently completed a 13-day surge on the Orange Line as part of the MBTA’s ongoing Track Improvement Program, removing 6 speed restrictions between Jackson Square Station and the Mass Ave Tunnel Portal. Our work included various concrete repairs to 46 direct fixation track panels, core drilling and replacement of more than 130 track shoulder posts, over 11,000 feet of rail replacement including 64 thermite welds, replacement of 250 timber ties, and nearly 2000 feet of tamping. The JV also replaced various special track components at the Ruggles Crossovers, removing a longstanding movement restriction for Orange Line trains traveling through the switches. We recently completed a series of shutdowns and a 4000amp circuit breaker replacement. This project at 60 Belvidere also included egress lighting upgrades. Make it Happen Monday: We are thrilled to announce that the MBTA Winchester Center Station has partially reopened for commuter rail service as of October 1, 2024! The partial opening includes the main station headhouses south of Waterfield Road and the station’s southeast ramp. The southeast of the station will assist all passengers riding both inbound and outbound and will be fully accessible. Upon the partial opening, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey offered, "This Winchester station will make it easier for residents to get to and from where they need to go and for visitors to access the area." And noted, “Our administration is proud to support the work the MBTA is doing to make our public transportation system more reliable and accessible and improve quality of life for the people we serve.” Full opening of the station is anticipated for Spring 2025! Over the past five weeks our dedicated team has worked tirelessly to complete the installation of the new Switchgear, 15kV cable, and Main Buswork for the Electric Boiler at the Vicinity Energy Power Plant. With a tight timeline, our in-house resources rose to the challenge, fabricating custom Buswork on-site to connect seamlessly with Vicinity's existing Long Bus. Thanks to our collaboration with United Power Group, we tested the Switchgear Cubicles and control cabling, ensuring that the 15kV cables and Buswork are ready to go live in the coming weeks. Our team put in long hours, including weekends, to help meet Vicinity's schedule for a significant utility outage necessary to energize the switchgear and advance the commissioning of the new boiler. This electric boiler represents a significant step towards a greener future for power and steam generation at Vicinity!

On September 27, 2024, Fischbach and Moore had the privilege of joining and participating in the 18 for 18 Tinlin Family Golf Tournament, all in support of the extraordinary work of the Brain Aneurysm Foundation. A heartfelt thank you to the amazing organizers and the Brain Aneurysm Foundation for their unwavering commitment to such an important cause. We are truly honored to stand alongside this mission and contribute to advancing awareness and support for those affected by brain aneurysms.

We’re excited to announce that starting September 6th, Fischbach and Moore will be at the forefront of a significant 24-day surge on the Red Line for the MBTA. This extensive project involves crucial upgrades across multiple stations and areas. During this surge, Fischbach and Moore will be instrumental in the removal and reinstallation of the signal system throughout the Red Line corridor. We’ll be working alongside SPS New England, Inc., RCC, RailWorks Corporation and Barletta Heavy Division, Inc. to ensure a seamless upgrade of the signal infrastructure from the Water Street truck pad to Braintree Station, and from the Tenean truck pad to Wollaston Station. Our efforts also include the installation of new signal systems at North Quincy Station and Braintree Station, featuring new CIHs, signal racks, conduit, cable tray, and cable, along with upgrading signal power. This is a major undertaking that brings together weeks of detailed planning and coordination. We’re proud to support three general contractors and contribute to a significant enhancement of the Red Line experience for all commuters.
