Marketing Meets Technology In May 2021, I decided to teach a PGP elective course The Digital Customer. The idea was motivated by my sense – vague as it was – that the customer in the 2020s was no longer the customer of the 2010s when I did my MBA and PhD. But I was sure sure there was a lot more to my “sense” that things were changing rapidly. What was happening seemed closer to a “reinvention” of marketing by technology. It was a bold and semi-substantiated view to take. And so, over the next four years, the course Marketing Meets Technology came into being. * The very first innings of the course with over 80 participants from the executive MBA program at the Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode was wrapped up late last month. We discussed “hot-off-the-oven” caselets from two companies working at the cutting edge of technology and marketing. Rahul Regulapati and team shared exciting work being done by Galleri5 (now, part of Collective Artists Network). Namrata Suryavanshi at FirstHive | Customer Data Platform provided caselets on how a CDP helps businesses realize measurable business value. We also discussed Maya, an early virtual influencer by PUMA Group, and the evolution of omnichannel marketing at Atomberg Technologies stepping into the shoes of Arindam Paul! The "martech blueprint" note by Prof. Kimberly A. Whitler and Scott Vaughan proved useful in helping students gain an overview of how organizations (should) use martech. Just as interesting was the guest session by Aditya Bhamidipaty, CEO and Founder of FirstHive | Customer Data Platform. This turned out to be a roaring hit, given Aditya's domain expertise, his teaching style, and participants' interest in martech. And as attested to by the zoom chat box! * The learning experience was thoroughly co-created by participants who shared experiences on robotic integration, chatbot services, AI in creative design, innovation at the “AI hub” of an MNC, and several others. We laughed and learnt as we lived many Sunday afternoons and Saturday evenings with each other. The plan now is to compile relevant caselets in the MMT (Marketing Meets Technology) space and share this (with appropriate caveats on usage and reproduction) to academics and students.
