I think the First Responder world isn’t ready to do better and here’s why. In three years time, we have spoken with, interacted with, and visited hundreds of departments and tens of thousands of first responders and their family members. We have the most extraordinarily emotional conversations with incredible people and I am at such a loss right now. Every single individual and each member of each department has acknowledged that: 1. There is a severe issue with the health and wellness of this community. Often times they open up and tell us that they have been diagnosed, experienced significant trauma, thought about suicide, or have had to help or even fire others for mental health concerns. 2. Yet, within the same breath say that their nightmares/sleep habits/drinking problem/anxiety/depression/marriage/anger/fill-in-the-blank, isn’t THAT bad! 3. There is a lack of upstream approaches, that yeah, they may know there’s something out there to help, (CISM, Peer Support, EAP, treatment facilities for in or out patient stays), and agree that those are all reactive responses. 4. Acknowledge in moments of reflection that we need to be doing more, we need to save lives, we need to move beyond the suck it up, we need to bring stronger, proactive resources. …but then…nothing...no follow-up, follow through, crickets. So after three years, thousands of meetings, dozens of events, meeting tens of thousands of people, FRC is now forced to pivot yet again. Why??? It’s not lack of funding from departments, it’s not lack of acknowledgment that things need to change, it’s not lack of interest, lack of understanding coaching, lack of fill-in-the-blank...so what is it?? It's so hard not to be discouraged. Discouraged by the loss of families and lives and the brother-sisterhood, the loss of experience and knowledge that could save the next first responder. I am utterly discouraged by the thought that I have done EVERYTHING I know how to do...the incredible people of FRC have done EVERYTHING we know how to do...and yet we still have people who are not hearing us. If you're still reading...thank you. If you're hearing us and ready to do better...let us know, you know how.

As the spouse of a medically retired police officer; she used life coaching as a way to move through the daily struggles of schedules, finances, and her marriage to create a deeper connection, stronger foundation, and thriving family life for her and her family. “As a wife of a police officer for 15 years, I've lived firsthand through the struggles of the job. I used to feel exhausted with worry, saddened by our lack of connection, and was devastated when my husband was hospitalized due to PTSD(I), depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. Four years later, I feel energized with a renewed sense of hope for our marriage, for our family and our future. It's been a learning process and now I feel ready to share how and why our marriage survived with all of you! There are so few resources for spouses of law enforcement members who are suffering from PTSD(I). I want to provide a resource that supports the growth, the healing, and the happiness, for all affected by the trauma sustained through First Responding. First Responder Coaching saves lives, marriages, and families!” – Jennifer Anderson, Founder and CEO of First Responder Coaching Book a time to chat with Jen: https://calendly.com/jennifera-frc/time-with-jen
